Actor Matthew McConaughey was a recent guest on The Megyn Kelly Show, where he discussed his career and raising kids. The actor, who is married to Camila Alves, has three children. They welcomed their first child, Levi, in 2008; their daughter, Vida, in 2010; and their son, Livingston, in 2012.
The couple first crossed paths in 2006 at a nightclub. After dating for almost six years, McConaughey and Alves married in 2012. During the conversation, Kelly mentioned how the actor was different from others in the industry, for instance, the way he valued his children.
Matthew McConaughey replied that he went to Hollywood to build his career. Speaking of returning home, he said:
“Also, my mom's here, my brothers are here. As soon as Camila and I decided to have children, I wanted them to be raised here near my home and around their family. I wanted them to be raised with the maybe what you could say is a little more common-sense values that I feel is around here, where a mile feels like a mile and 60 minutes feels like an hour.”
McConaughey added:
“It was also at that time I was doing romantic comedies and I was the romcom guy and I love doing them and I hope to do more later on. I was rolling in the romcoms, successful, enjoying the heck out of them. At the same time, I was so successful at them that any dramas I wanted to do. Hollywood was not offering me, even if I took a huge pay cut.”
His son, Levi, acted in Paul Greengrass’s The Lost Bus. Megyn Kelly reflected on the question of nepotism for star kids, in the context of which Matthew McConaughey said that he did not want his children to feel entitled.
Matthew McConaughey details how Levi got the role in the movie
Matthew McConaughey said that when he was talking to his family about one of his movies, Levi asked if he could try out for a role of a boy about his age. At first, Matthew didn’t take him seriously and walked away to see if Levi wanted it or if it was just a passing thought.
When Levi kept asking over the next week, Matthew explained that acting was serious work and needed respect and effort. They practiced together, recorded it on camera, and McConaughey noticed that Levi had a natural presence and honesty in front of the camera. He told Megyn:
“I sent it to the casting director and I said, ‘Francine, I think this may be good enough for call back. What do you think?’ And she wrote back said, ‘I think it's good enough to send to the director.’ And I said, ‘Oh, okay. Will you do me a favor? Will you pull his last name off because I just don't want if it preceded, you know, anyone's opinion to help.”
Matthew McConaughey said all he could do was open the door for his son, but from that point onwards, he would be on his own. He recalled that the director liked it, and Francine told him that it was Matthew’s son, and he eventually got the role. The actor said he was proud of Levi because he could do it because of his merit and talent.
