Actor Pedro Pascal offered a scathing critique of the erosion of migrant protections in the US at the press conference at Cannes Film Festival for Eddington, in which he appears alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler.
Addressing a question from the press about the fear with which Latin Americans live in America in the wake of the government’s deportations, Pascal said,
“It's far too intimidating of a question for me to really address. I’m not, I'm not informed enough. I want people to to to be safe and to be protected. And I want very much to live on the right side of history. And I'm an immigrant. My parents are refugees from Chile. I myself was a refugee. We fled a dictatorship.”
Pedro Pascal’s parents, Verónica Pascal Ureta and José Balmaceda Riera, fled Chile during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorial regime. People Magazine reported that, according to Pascal, his parents had to flee their native country after providing medical attention to an anti-Pinochet activist. According to the publication, Pascal’s parents were granted refugee status, and they arrived in the US from Denmark.

Continuing with his opinion on the migrant crisis in the US, Pascal said at Cannes,
“I was privileged enough to grow up in the US, and after asylum in Denmark, and if it weren't for that I don't know what would have happened to us. And so I stand by those protections always."
All about Pedro Pascal’s family
Two years ago, The Last of Us actor paid tribute to his family while hosting the late-night sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live. Recalling his roots in Chile, Pascal said,
“I was born in Chile, and nine months later, my parents fled and brought me and my sister to the US. They were so brave, and without them, I wouldn’t be here in this wonderful country.”
He also shared that he still has family in Chile, and said,
“I have 34 cousins who are still there. They’re very proud of me… to all my family watching in Chile, I want to say [Spanish], which means, I love you, I miss you.”

Pascal has three siblings in total. After his parents settled down in the US, they had two more children, Nicolás and Lux, born in 1987 and 1992, respectively.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pascal’s youngest sister, Lux, came out as transgender in 2021. Lux has followed her brother and made a career for herself in the entertainment industry. As per the news outlet, Lux works primarily in Chilean dramas. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Lux spoke about her brother’s stardom, saying,
“I’m incredibly proud. But the thing is that I’ve always known that he is a superstar. It’s funny because people have been asking me, ‘Is he as kind as we think he is?’ And I’m like, ‘Yes!’”
According to a 2019 post by Pascal, his brother, Nicolás, was pursuing a PhD in pediatric neurology.
People Magazine notes that Pascal’s family moved back to Chile in the late 90s, following which his mother tragically passed away in 1999.
Pedro Pascal, who was extremely close to his mother and even took her last name to honor her, posted a tribute on social media for her birthday in Spanish.
