Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has announced that he has transferred to Louisiana State University.

In his place, American football coach Pete Golding has been appointed as the head coach. Kiffin wrote on X:

“After a lot of prayer and time spent with family, I made the difficult decision to accept the head coaching position at LSU. I was hoping to complete a historic six season run with this year's team by leading Ole Miss through the playoffs, capitalizing on the team's incredible success and their commitment to finish strong, and investing everything into a playoff run with guardrails in place to protect the program in any areas of concern.”

Lane Kiffin mentioned that he was not allowed to do so by Keith Carter. He said he would cherish the memories he made during his time at Ole Miss. Despite everything, he shared his support for the team.

According to Ole Miss's official website, Pete Golding will serve as the 40th head coach. As per the website, his achievements include:

“Golding has orchestrated several dominant Ole Miss defenses since arriving in Oxford in 2023, including a school-record pass rush in 2024, and with the Rebels he has mentored eight NFL Draft picks.”

Furthermore:

“During his time as Ole Miss’ defensive coordinator since 2023, Golding has transformed the defensive mentality of the Rebels into one of the SEC’s better units.”

Pete Golding is married to Carolyn. The couple has three children.

A peek into Pete Golding’s career as a coach

As per a statement he shared on the website, Pete Golding said Ole Miss football felt special to him from the moment he arrived because the fans cared so much. He said the team’s goal was to play with strength, focus, and hard work in everything they did.

He also said they would work to bring in great players, help them grow on and off the field, and try every day to win championships for Oxford. He added that they would always represent the school with good behavior. He thanked everyone for their support and said he was excited for the future and ready to take on the challenge with them.

Pete Golding's career in the sport started in 2006. Back then, he was a graduate assistant at Delta State. He is also an alumnus of the same institute where he studied business. During his tenure, he trained the defensive backs. The website also mentions:

“Golding joined the UTSA staff after spending two years as an assistant at Southern Miss where he coached the safeties. The Golden Eagles posted a six-win improvement in his second season, finishing 9-5 overall with a trip to the Heart of Dallas Bowl while winning the Western Division of Conference USA.”

The website said Pete Golding had a tough job replacing one of the best Ole Miss defenses ever, but his 2025 team still did really well with new players and recruits. Junior players TJ Dottery and Suntarine Perkins led the team with a lot of tackles. Younger players like Kam Franklin, Will Echoles, and transfer Princewill Umanmielen also made big plays by stopping runners and getting sacks.
