Robin Chadwick, a British-New Zealand actor, died at the age of 85 on September 7, 2025, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was best known for playing David Hammond in the BBC series The Brothers, which aired from 1972 to 1976.

Chadwick was born in 1939 in Rotorua, New Zealand. As per the magazine NZ Listener, he grew up in a family with a background in the arts, with his father working in radio and stage drama. After attending university in New Zealand and working different jobs, he earned a scholarship that took him to England. It was there that he began his acting career.

His big break came with the role of David Hammond in The Brothers. He played the youngest Hammond brother, who was often caught between family struggles and personal challenges. The show made him a well-known face in British television during the 1970s.

Robin Chadwick already had a screen experience before The Brothers. His appearances included adaptations of classical works, such as Pride and Prejudice in 1967, where he played Col. Fitzwilliam, and Hamlet in 1969, where he portrayed Francisco. He had also appeared in Thirty-Minute Theatre and BBC Play of the Month. These parts provided him with a regular job and a home in British television.

His performance in The Brothers turned out to be the climax of his career. The Brothers concentrated on issues of family businesses and personal conflicts, with Chadwick starring as the youngest of three brothers, David Hammond. He remained with the series throughout its run from 1972-1976.

He continued working in television and theatre after the series was completed. He spent his time in the United States as well. In Dallas, he played stage roles, action roles, such as Ebenezer Scrooge in a production of A Christmas Carol. He worked on Broadway alongside co-stars Glynis Johns, Rex Harrison, and Nigel Hawthorne.

His concluding role on screen was opposite comedian Thomas Mikal Ford, in a 1998 American crime series titled New York Undercover.

Personal life and later years

According to his obituary, Robin Chadwick met his wife, Susan Jane Mascuch, while working at a theatre called The Bush. They got married in 1973, as per The Daily Mail. The couple eventually moved to New York in 1980, where Chadwick worked in regional theatres, off-Broadway, as well as on Broadway.

In his later life, Robin Chadwick fought against Alzheimer's disease. The actor is said to have been reciting and quoting his favorite excerpts and poetry by Shakespeare even as the disease took over. The actor passed away in Weehawken, New Jersey.

According to The Daily Mail, Robin Chadwick is survived by his wife, Susan, his brother Anthony, and his sister Truda, in addition to an extended family in New Zealand, Australia, and the US.

His contribution to the screen as well as the theatre will be remembered by countless fans, family, and friends.
