Not Superman, but this MCU movie almost offered the first potential superhero role to David Corenswet

Before stepping into the shoes of DCU's Superman, David Corenswet was supposed to be part of the MCU's final chapter of Guardians of the Galaxy, according to the actor himself. The update came to light in April 2024 when a Threads user asked James Gunn about Corenswet's MCU audition. At the time, the user asked,

"is it true that david auditioned for adam warlock ? and if so can we expect the same type of vfx of adams flying incorporated into superman ?"

James Gunn responded,

"I asked him about it and he said he did so I believe him, but I don’t remember it. And no, what we’re doing now for flying is much more complex than what was done for AW."

Based on Gunn's comments, Corenswet told him that he had auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), which eventually went to Will Poulter. The movie was written and directed by Gunn, and it was his last project at Marvel.

That's why the user asked Gunn if Corenswet's latest role would emulate how Adam Warlock was shown flying in his suit. Gunn revealed that "flying is much more complex" in Superman. This is not the only time Gunn has spoken about a potential cast crossover between his projects for DC and Marvel.

James Gunn might have crossed the bridge from Marvel to DC, but he still keeps in touch with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise's cast. The Superman director has hinted that some of the GOTG cast might be a part of his DC projects. In June 2025, Gunn told ComicBook.com,

“Listen, Chris Pratt is still one of my closest friends in the world, and I am always looking for something for him. But also … the others, too. I mean, he and Pom [Klementieff] are the ones that I see the most, and I’m the closest with and [Michael] Rooker. So I’m always looking for stuff.”

Before that, Pratt was seen on the set of Gunn's Superman. In a following interview with TMZ, Pratt said that he is "more than happy" to be a part of Gunn's future DC projects.

“I just have to leave that to the fans and people like James to decide. I’m not exactly sure. I’m truly not sure. If it could fit into my schedule and it made sense, I would love it. Of course, I love playing Star-Lord, and hopefully, there’s a chance that I can come back. I just feel so blessed to be able to do any of it, to be considered for any of it. If it’s right and the fans would love it, I’d be more than happy to do it.”

More recently, Gunn mentioned Pratt while speaking about David Corenswet's casting as the son of Krypton. The director believed that Pratt was the only person, besides Corenswet, to match the whimsy required to play the part. Here's what Gunn told the GQ magazine,

"The easy part is, [David Corenswet] looks like Superman. But the fact that David is a theater kid who’s so athletic is even weirder. I don’t know if anybody I’ve worked with before would’ve been able to do this stuff, besides maybe Chris Pratt.”

Hopefully, the Chris Pratt fans will soon get to see his other collaboration with James Gunn.

Superman will be theatrically released on July 11, 2025.
