Jesús Montero, whose full name is Jesús Alejandro Montero López, passed away on October 4 due to a fatal motorcycle crash. At the time of his passing, details of his injuries were not revealed to the public. Montero was riding his bike in Valencia, Venezuela, about 93 miles west of Caracas, when he crashed into a pickup truck.
El Nacional reported that the 35-year-old professional baseball player sustained serious injuries. It was his brother, Maikel Guevara, who revealed the list of injuries his brother had. These include:
"a punctured lung, six broken ribs, multiple fractures to his extremities, femur, tibia, and fibula, as well as hip and knee injuries."
While he was in the hospital, he had to be put on dialysis because of the severity of his condition. He was in an induced coma and had to be resuscitated.
How did the baseball world mourn for Jesús Montero?
Montero was a former Yankee and debuted for them in 2011. General manager and baseball executive for the Yankees, Brian Cashman, once called Montero "the best player I’ve traded." The New York Yankees took to X to express their condolences.
The post reads:
"The Yankees are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jesús Montero. We send our sincerest condolences to his family & loved ones."
The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League also expressed its sentiments for one of its best baseball players in the world. They wrote in the statement:
"Venezuelan baseball sadly bids farewell to Jesús Montero, who left a legacy of effort and passion for the game... Today, baseball mourns his passing. But it also remembers him with gratitude: for every home run that thrilled fans, for every day he proudly defended his country's colors, and for every young person who saw in him as an example that dreams can be achieved."
He played six seasons in the Venezuelan Winter League with the Navegantes del Magallanes, Cardenales de Lara, and Águilas del Zulia. He retired at 31 after the 2020 - 21 season.
