American baseball player Mike Greenwell has died at the age of 62 following a battle with thyroid cancer, a type of cancer that happens when cells in the thyroid gland in the neck start growing uncontrollably.

Confirming the news, his son Bo Greenwell wrote on Facebook:

"After a long year a fighting cancer my dad has passed away. It has been a long year for him through alot of pain and suffering. Now he can finally rest in peace. Thank you to everyone who has been keeping him in your thoughts and prayers. Hero’s get remembered, but Legends never died."

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the type of thyroid cancer Greenwell had, medullary thyroid cancer, is very rare, accounting for only about 2% of all thyroid cancers. Around a quarter of cases run in families, often linked to a genetic mutation.

Mike Greenwell was first diagnosed with the cancer in August, according to Boston’s WCVB.

Mike Greenwell worked via Zoom meetings

After Mike Greenwell's fight with cancer became public knowledge, Greenwell, in a reported statement by Gulf Coast, said:

"As part of my recovery and to protect my immune system, I've been working from home and participating in board meetings via Zoom and over the phone, as I did Monday and Tuesday of this week."

According to Gulf Coast News, he also thanked others for the support he received. However, Greenwell didn’t share updates about when he planned to return to public life.

Mike Greenwell was working as a County Commissioner in Lee County, Florida, at the time of his death. Sharing the news, the Lee County Facebook Page posted:

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Commissioner Mike Greenwell, a lifelong Lee County resident. He was a strong advocate for the people and businesses of Lee County and will be remembered for seeking meaningful solutions to the challenges his community faced"

Anchor Brian Hamman, briefing on Mike's life, wrote on Facebook:

"After his baseball career, Mike drove race cars and later competed in professional bass fishing tournaments. Whatever he did, he worked hard to be at the top of his game."

He continued:

"I rooted for Mike as a kid growing up here and had a great time playing at his family fun park. Later as a sportscaster for FOX 4, I covered Mike's work as a coach who was supporting his kids in their high school sports pursuits. When he joined us on the County Commission, I’ll admit I was a little starstruck, but I also knew he would pick it up quickly."
