Johnny Depp has been at the front and centre of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise since the early 2000s. He starred as Jack Sparrow, the trickster pirate, and filled it with his usual charm and wit. Still, in recent years, there were reports of a franchise reboot, headlined by a female character, replacing Jack Sparrow.

In 2020, Variety reported that Disney is planning the said reboot with the Barbie star Margot Robbie as the lead. There were also reports citing Depp's lack of interest in returning to the franchise in his iconic role. Since then, the female-led Pirates film hasn't received any official update. However, there were rumors about Depp's return to the franchise, alongside Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom.

Knightley and Bloom starred in the first three movies of the franchise as Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner, respectively. So, in the wake of these reports, Bloom weighed in on this topic. He also spoke about a potential female-led reboot during his time at the Fan Expo Chicago 2025. According to Entertainment Weekly, Bloom said,

“My thing is, if the script was great and — ideally it was everybody — it’d be kind of like in for a penny, in for a pound, you know."

He further added,

“What they’re thinking…is how to do it. Do you bring in a female leading character that replicates Jack in some way? I don’t know. The jury is out on how to do it again, but if [the script] was great, [I’d be in].”

Orlando Bloom also shared some updates about the script for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie

It's been many years since the fans got a chance to watch Jack Sparrow sailing the ship. It happened almost a decade ago in the 2017 film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Since then, a sixth franchise installment has been stuck in a developmental limbo, with more recent reports suggesting only the state of scripting.

In May 2024, the longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer told EW about a script being penned by Jeff Nathanson, who previously wrote Dead Men Tell No Tales.

"I think [Nathanson] has cracked it. He's got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second, and then we'll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act," said Bruckheimer.

Then, over a year later, Orlando Bloom shares another update on the stage of the Pirates of the Caribbean 6 script while speaking at the Fan Expo Chicago.

“Everything is in the writing, right? Everything is on the page, and I think there’s definitely, I’m sure there’s a way to create something," Orlando Bloom said, as per EW.

He continued,

“I would personally love to see everybody back. I think the way to win on that one is to get everybody back. If they can, and if everybody wanted to go back.”

Speaking about Johnny Depp's return to the franchise, producer Bruckenheimer more recently told EW,

“If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know… We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close.”
