Weapons is off to a thunderous start at the box office. The horror flick is already being counted among the best films of the year, thanks to its intriguing storyline, layered characters, and impressive performances.
As 17 children of the same class move out of their houses at the same time one night, Police Officer Paul Morgan gets involved in the case. Played by Alden Ehrenreich, Paul makes his presence felt with his rugged appearance and layered character.
His mustache adds a charm to his personality, making him look like a quintessential police officer. However, Ehrenreich revealed that the Weapons team was not in favor of his sporting a mustache for the role. When he sent a picture of himself with a mustache to director Zach Cregger, that was when he told him to keep it and finalized his character’s look.
Paul’s mustache was a topic of discussion for the Weapons team
In a recent interview with Men’s Health, Alden Ehrenreich revealed that when the discussion about his role in Weapons started, both he and Zach Cregger were against the idea of Paul having a mustache, as the look has been recreated numerous times in films and TV shows. Ehrenreich said:
“When we first started talking about the character, we were like, ‘There’s no f****** way we’re going to do a mustache. We’re not doing a mustache! It’s super trope-y. Every cop in every movie has one. We’re not doing it!”
However, Zach changed his mind when he actually saw the actor with a mustache. Further, when Ehrenreich spent some time with real-life officers to prepare for Weapons, he noticed that they indeed had mustaches, which reaffirmed his decision:
“Then I sent Zach a picture of me with a mustache, and he was like, ‘Don’t shave the mustache.’ And then I spent time with some cops—and they all had the mustache!”
Talking about how these small details often change while making a movie, Ehrenreich stated:
“It’s just the way making movies goes so much of the time: you have some fixed idea in your head that you’re very passionate and excited about, then when you’re actually on the dance floor, you do end up doing something totally different, and it makes more sense and works better.”
In Weapons, Officer Paul has a complicated relationship with Justine, the school teacher who is being blamed for the children’s disappearance. He soon gets entangled in the mystery, which draws him into the dark world of an unseen force.
The film also stars Josh Brolin as Archer Graff, Julia Garner as Justine Gandy, Cary Christopher as Alex Lilly, Austin Abrams as James, Benedict Wong as Marcus Miller, Whitmer Thomas as Mr. Lilly, Callie Schuttera as Mrs. Lilly, June Diane Raphael as Donna Morgan, Toby Huss as Ed Locke, Clayton Farris as Terry Miller, Amy Madigan as Gladys, and Scarlett Sher as the narrator.
