Prince William and Princess Charlotte surprised fans on Sunday, July 27. They came to Basel, Switzerland, to watch the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 final. The England women’s team, known as the Lionesses, played against Spain for the title, and this was Charlotte’s first overseas soccer game.

The Prince of Wales, 43, attended as the patron of the Football Association, showing support for England’s women’s soccer team, as they aimed to defend their title from 2022. Charlotte, aged 10, joined her father in the stands. The match at St. Jakob‑Park in Basel brought them together for this big moment.

Prince William and Princess Charlotte's surprise visit: more details

Prince William’s attendance was confirmed on July 23. He has followed the Lionesses' games all through the tournament and visited their training base at St. George’s Park, and watched a match in Zurich on July 9.

Prince William is a well‑known soccer fan. He is also a patron of the FA and has shown strong support for the women’s soccer team. His presence at the final signals his continued backing of the sport.

The outing happened during the royal family’s summer break. His children were out of school, which allowed William to attend the game with his daughter Charlotte. Prince William and Kate often slow down their public schedule when their children are on holiday.

Princess Charlotte reportedly sent the Lionesses good luck messages earlier, while showing support from home. Now she attended her first overseas match. Just two weeks earlier, William and Charlotte attended the Wimbledon men’s singles final in London, during which they sat in the Royal Box with Prince George.

Atmosphere, reactions, and details

At the St. Jakob-Park stadium, Charlotte was seen wearing a navy blue polka‑dot dress, sporting blonde highlights, while her father wore a dark navy suit. They sat near other European royals, including Spain’s Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía. Prince William was seen greeting UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin before kickoff.

Around 34,000 fans filled the stadium. Some 16 million watched live in the UK on the BBC and ITV. The energy was high and tense as the match went into extra time. Spain scored first, but England’s Alessia Russo equalised with a header from a Chloe Kelly cross. England’s rookie Michelle Agyemang added spark off the bench. The game was reported to be tight and dramatic.

As per reports, before the match, Prince William said:

"Good luck to the Lionesses tomorrow. The nation is so proud you are through to the final, after some stunning comebacks! We are all cheering you on!"
