Professor cancels midterm amid Taylor Swift–Travis Kelce engagement hype, saying “I can’t focus, you all can’t focus,” Video goes viral

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement on August 26, 2025; the world is still reeling from it. The couple’s joint Instagram post caused quite a stir, and a professor had to cancel a biochemistry test.

In a viral video making the rounds online, an associate professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Mathew Pittman, jokingly canceled a scheduled midterm assessment because he couldn't focus. His message to his students went as follows:

“Due to this information, I can’t focus. You all can’t focus. Class is canceled. Get out of here. Please [try] to process this information.”

The professor’s students were all too happy to skip the class. The video was shared on TikTok and garnered over a million views in less than a day.

Believing the video to be real, fans left sweet messages in the comments. However, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville clarified to fans that the videos circulating online were not real and were staged:

"Associate Professor Matthew Pittman, who studies social influence, cognition, and all things social media, breaks down the engagement from an advertising and PR perspective," The clip was captioned. "Watch how he connects this pop culture moment to the classroom (yes, including a skit at the end.”

Travis made several appearances on Swift’s Eras tour. The Grammy-winning artist made a surprise appearance at a Kansas City Chiefs game in September 2023 and continued to support them at other games.

They spent Christmas 2023 together. Kelce was a key part of the Eras tour concerts in 2024, as he cheered for his girlfriend. The couple posted their first official Instagram photo together in June 2024. They made their red carpet debut almost a year later.

They announced their engagement in August 2025 with the caption:

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

Fans and celebrities flooded the social media with congratulatory messages. Moments after the news broke, the President of the United States congratulated Taylor Swift and Kelce on their engagement during a white house cabinet meeting.
