Renowned Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino will not be returning to direct the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel called The Adventures of Cliff Booth for Netflix. The film was announced to be in the works in April 2025, with Brad Pitt, who will reprise his character.

David Fincher was tapped to direct the sequel film after getting Tarantino's approval. Recently, in The Church of Tarantino podcast, the Oscar-winning director shared that the project did not excite him enough. He wanted to delve into uncharted areas for his last film, but the sequel did not offer this opportunity.

He shared:

"I love this script, but I’m still walking down the same ground I’ve already walked. It just kind of unenthused me. This last movie, I’ve got to not know what I’m doing again. I’ve got to be in uncharted territory."

Quentin Tarantino hands the reins of The Adventures of Cliff Booth to David Fincher

As mentioned, David Fincher will direct the sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for Netflix. Tarantino wanted to explore more for his last film rather than tread the same territory. In the podcast, he further shared why David Fincher is the perfect director for the sequel.

He said:

"I think me and David Fincher are the two best directors. So the idea that David Fincher actually wants to adapt my work, to me, shows a level of seriousness towards my work that I think needs to be taken into account."

While he might not direct the film, Quentin Tarantino is still a huge part of the movie as the script was written by him, and he will also serve as one of the producers. In addition, he also shared that he will be available if he is required on the set.

He said:

"I’m moving back and forth between here and Israel, so I won’t be on the set every day and everything. But, yeah, I’ll be around if they need me to do something, you know, I will."

With Tarantino’s approval, David Fincher has joined the cast and crew of the upcoming film, which also includes stars such as Elizabeth Debicki, Carla Gugino, Scott Caan, JB Tadena, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Corey Fogelmanis.

While he did not want The Adventures of Cliff Booth to be his final film, Quentin Tarantino had previously talked about his upcoming film, The Movie Critic, to be his final film. However, he later dropped the decision.

Quentin Tarantino shared in the podcast that he initially wrote an eight-part series and later converted it into a movie script. He further shared the reason why he retracted from making it his final film and said:

"There was a challenge that I gave to myself when I did it. Can I take the most boring profession in the world and make it an interesting movie? Every Tarantino title promises so much, except The Movie Critic."
