In 2014, the director and lead cast of the iconic 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption spoke to the Oscars about what drew them to the project.
In the interview, director Frank Darabont, along with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, reflected on what it was about the story that moved them. Darabont said:
"Its really the gift. The gift that keeps on giving, is the one that Stephen King gave us. He gave that story to the world I was able to co-opt it, steal it, borrow it, and then pass it on to these guys in the form of the screenplay. Its really we're all responding to what Stephen King had given us, I think".
Let’s take a closer look at what the cast and director had to say about the timeless story behind The Shawshank Redemption.
“It’s one of the great stories of all time”: When the director of The Shawshank Redemption shared his thoughts about the story
In 2014, the director and lead cast of the iconic film The Shawshank Redemption spoke to the Oscars about its legacy. By that time, it had been 20 years since the movie was released.
The interviewer had asked the cast about what drew them to work in this particular film—especially when both Freeman and Robbins were at the top of their game in their respective careers. When the film was released, it was not a box-office success. But The Shawshank Redemption went on to become one of the most iconic films in the history of Hollywood, receiving rave reviews and widespread recognition. It also garnered seven nominations at the Oscars.
The film was based on a novella by Stephen King titled Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption (1982). It follows a unique story of friendship between two men in a prison, Andy and Red. Andy has been convicted for killing his wife and her lover, whereas Red has been a smuggler.
In response to the question, Morgan Freeman mentioned in the interview:
"It was an incredible script. I read the script without knowing which character I was being told to read for. Nobody told me which character to read for. No, so when I read the script I called my agent and said 'Whatever'. Didn't really matter to me. And then he said 'No no, they want you to play."
Freeman then burst into a giggle and later added:
"But then when I did know, boy, I was like 'Okay, I own this'."
Tim Robbins was all praises for the script of The Shawshank Redemption, which was written by the director himself. Robbins mentioned:
"It was a beautiful script Frank wrote. A truly extraordinary script. And I would suggest anyone that is learning how to re-write screenplays to read that script. It's so beautifully constructed."
Frank Darabont then elaborated on what he felt when he first read Stephen King's story that inspired him to adapt it into a movie, as he stated:
"Let's loop back around to Stephen King. That incredible story that Stephen King wrote that captured me when I read that in different seasons. I mean it just seized me. It's one of the great stories of all time, and I thought if I'm lucky enough to get my hands on this thing and lucky enough to get somebody to recognize how good the story is, then make the movie. Then, fantastic!"
