Allen Greene was the literary agent for Frank Darabont, the creator of The Shawshank Redemption. Allen Greene died of AIDS while the film was in production, and his legacy was honored in the 142-minute final cut of the theatrically released movie.

Director Frank Darabont's parting message to his audience at the end of The Shawshank Redemption has nothing to do with the main characters Andy (Tim Robbins) or Red (Morgan Freeman); rather, it is about a man named Allen Greene, to whom the film was dedicated.

The majority of Darabont's early work was in the screenwriting field, and he was extremely grateful to Greene for agreeing to act as his agent in the 1980s and pitching Darabont's spec scripts to potential producers. Greene never saw Darabont complete the project he had first described two years before, and he died from AIDS-related issues in 1989, only months after the release of Darabont's third feature, The Fly II. To show his appreciation for Greene's belief in him during the crucial early years of his career, Darabont included the tribute in The Shawshank Redemption.

The Shawshank Redemption began a limited North American screening on September 23, 1994, after having its premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield.

What is The Shawshank Redemption based on?

The Shawshank Redemption is based on Stephen King’s realist novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. Viking Press first released it in his collection Different Seasons in 1982. Later, it was featured in Stephen King Goes to the Movies, a compilation published in 2009.

The story revolves around Andy Dufresne, a former vice president of a bank, who is falsely accused of killing his wife and her lover and ends up in Shawshank State Penitentiary, a place where violence and corruption are rampant.

It is a tale of prison escape reminiscent of vintage Warner Bros. movies, according to Stephen King. The work is regarded as one of King's best and was written in a genre that was out of his regular range.
