As per Deadline, David F. Sandberg shall be remaking a brand-new Amityville film with Amazon MGM Studios. The forthcoming film is based on the original 1970s film, The Amityville Horror. For this film, writers Ian B. Goldberg and Richard Naing have been brought on board.

Goldberg and Naing are the masters of writing horror stories, as they have previously penned scripts in this genre including The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016), Eli (2019, along with David Chirchirillo), The Nun II (2023, with Akela Cooper) and the latest horror release, The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025, with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick), to name a few.

In fact, David F. Sandberg is also not new to the genre of horror. His previous directorials, such as his debut feature film, Lights Out (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017) and the 2025 film, Until Dawn, all of them belong to this genre.

In addition to directing, Sandberg will also produce the horror film. Joining him, Safran Company shall be producing as well. From the company, we have John Rickard and Peter Safran as producers. As executive producers we have Lotta Losten and Natalia Safran.

The original 1970s film was directed by Stuart Rosenberg, starring James Brolin, Margot Kidder, Rod Steiger, Don Stroud and many others. The film is derived from the novel penned by Jay Anson, named 'The Amityville Horror'. The book features a real-life story of a family named the Lutz, who allegedly experience paranormal activities at a residence in Amityville.

That residence is the same site where the infamous American mass murderer, Ronald DeFeo Jr., killed his family. So, after a year, the Lutz family started living there. However, they leave the house after they claim to experience paranormal events at the residence.

The film was met with critical reviews upon its release, but it achieved a massive commercial success. As recorded by Box Office Mojo, it made a collection of a whopping $86,432,000. Hence, the film became an iconic one in the world of horror films. Post this film, several films in the franchise have been made.

In 2005, a remake of the original was made, with actors Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, Philip Baker Hall, Jesse James and many others. This too had received poor reviews, but had a successful box office performance. It garnered a collection of $107,516,369.

However, plot details about the upcoming The Amityville Horror reimagining have not been revealed yet.
