The post-credit scene in The Conjuring: Last Rites 'mirrors' reality, quite literally!
The Conjuring: Last Rites has a post-credit scene that you would not want to miss. Because, the beauty of this franchise lies in its credit cookie. So, just when the film concludes, and you rush to get up from your seats after experiencing all the heebie-jeebies, that is the moment when you must hold on and wait a little.
In its poignant stinger, it all circles back to how it all began in the first place. We see a carousel of photographs and videos that feature the real-life couple Lorraine and Ed. However, in the last photo of the series, there is something we witness that connects with reality.
We see an image of Ed with the key artifact of the film, the infamous jinxed mirror. It is the very object that triggers a series of horrific events in the film, and by the end, the mirror has been locked away in the couple's occult museum.
The Conjuring: Last Rites ends on a pleasant note with the couple's daughter Judy setting out on a new journey. We cherish the moments of Lorraine and Ed, who gleefully dance, celebrating their years of togetherness, against all odds. However, in the post-credit scene, it serves as a reminder that these people had actually walked on earth at one point. And also, the cursed mirror in the film actually exists.
So, in that post-credit scene, we honor and bid a final adieu to the fierce couple who have risked their lives in order to save the ones tormented by the alleged paranormal forces. So, in the end, it is revealed that this mirror itself is the Conjuring mirror, and it can be used to summon spirits.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, when the helmer, Michael Chaves, was asked if this is the reason why the entire franchise is named like that, the director responded by saying that it was more of a chance. As he says:
"It was more this kismet 'the stars aligned.'"
Furthermore, whilst discussing the importance of the mirror in the film, and its relevance in its post-credit scene, Chaves talked about his vision. He explained that he wanted the artifact in the film to serve as more than just an ornamental piece. It holds a greater meaning and significance and can actually be the core of the storyline, as he elucidates:
"I really wanted the movie to center on an artifact. I kind of felt like the artifacts were these secondary elements to the movies. We have a case, and then here's a trophy. But I just love the idea with the artifact room that the artifact is this container of evil that needs to be locked away, just like Annabelle. It felt like that is their experience; they collect these evil things. So I want the artifact to be front and center."
