This weekend, Doctor Who star David Tennant (who is also known for portraying Kilgrave in MCU's Jessica Jones) joined his fans at the MCM Comic Con in London, where he came across a lot of questions about best characters, favorite episodes (of TV shows he has starred in), and his dream roles.
While answering one of the fans' questions about which superhero he'd like to play, Tennant replied:
"In terms of superheroes, I did slightly have my eye on Reed Richards, and unfortunately, it looks like they’ve gone in a different direction."
However, he further added that he's really pleased that a star like Pedro Pascal played Mr. Fantastic's part in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which is gearing up for a summer premiere. Tennant went on engaging in an amusing exchange of words with his fans at MCM, where he also imitated using the MCU icon's superpowers.
David Tennant from Doctor Who wanted to play the role of Reed Richards
David Tennant (who is also known from the Harry Potter franchise) has had his eyes on the Fantastic Four frontman, Reed Richards for quite some time. As per his statement at the MCM Comic Con:
"Well. I would have quite liked to be Reed Richards. I'd quite like to be able to do all that."(imitates superhero moves)
However, he also talked about how it recently got driven 'in a different direction' and mentioned how he is more than glad with Pedro Pascal playing the legendary character. He stated,
"I mean it will definitely be him, he’s Mister Fantastic, so in every sense of the word. I think Pedro Pascal is great. I’m very, very pleased that he exists."
Tennant also revisited his time on the set of Marvel (for Season 1 of Jessica Jones), where he played the part of the iconic supervillain Zebidiah Kilgrave, aka Purple Man. According to his statement at MCM, it was something he really enjoyed doing and also 'worked out quite' well for him.
What we think of David Tennant potentially playing Reed Richards for MCU
With Doctor Who gaining huge traction over the years (in terms of audience response as well as critic scores), David Tennant's Tenth Doctor part has only added further value to the show. So, with a star like him (who has done notable work in projects like Harry Potter, Good Omens, and Broadchurch) joining the MCU would definitely bring promising introductions for classic comic fans.
However, his previous antagonistic role in Jessica Jones would definitely mean creative contradictions, and if it ever happens, it will set a new trend in the world of superheroes. While concluding his comments on his dream MCU role, Tennant addressed his fans, saying that even though the part has been taken for now (and there won't be any potential recasting anytime soon), he would like to 'stick with' his choice.
Given the fact that David Tennant is known for his versatile on-screen presence (having played a multitude of roles across varied franchises—from detective to supervillain to ruthless 'auror'), his re-introduction to the MCU would also make quite sense. However, it is now only a matter of time till we see how the new phase of stories unfolds and whether Tennant gets a part in it.
