Among the deeply emotional and layered movies is Sorry, Baby, which blends trauma recovery with dark humor, something that entertainment lovers won't find in many stories.

The film made waves at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2025, and since then, it has sparked curiosity among movie enthusiasts. Not only this, but its fresh storytelling style led to a bidding war among distributors, and A24 ended up securing the global rights with an $8 million deal.

For audiences beyond festivals, the Sorry, Baby is set for a limited release in theaters starting June 27, 2025, with tickets going on sale at that time. It stars the writer and director, Eva Victor, as the main character, Agnes.

Instead of focusing on the violence itself, Sorry, Baby quietly follows Agnes, a literature professor, as she tries to move forward with life after being assaulted by someone she trusted during her grad school years. The timeline doesn’t unfold in a straight line; instead, the movie dips in and out of different phases of her recovery.

With chapter-like segments titled things like "The Year With the Bad Thing" and "The Year With the Good Sandwich," viewers get a window into Agnes’ scattered but human experience of coping, connecting and slowly healing.

Eva Victor, who wrote and directed the film, also stars as Agnes. Known for her sharp humor on the internet. Victor brings the same wit, mixed with emotional depth, to the big screen.

She’s joined by Naomi Ackie, who plays Lydie, Agnes’ fierce and loyal best friend. Victor herself has called Ackie "the missing piece" (via The Hollywood Reporter) that brought the film together.

Lucas Hedges plays Gavin, a shy but kind neighbor who gently becomes part of Agnes’ life, helping her begin to trust again. During the same interview, Victor mentioned:

"Lucas was like this amazing guy that I knew of course, due to the amazing lore of your show. And I wrote him a letter an he literally I think read it."

Hearing the director and co-star, Hedges explained that he did read the letter, but didn't read the script. However, the actor agreed to be a part of Sorry, Baby, and now many are excited to see him playing a key role.

Other cast members include John Carroll Lynch, Kelly McCormack, and Louis Cancelmi, each adding nuance to Agnes’ world.

I saw this through virtual Sundance, and this is currently the movie to beat this year. You’re going to laugh in some moments, and it’ll rip at your heartstrings in others. Eva Victor is a phenomenal talent, and I can’t wait to see what she/they (as Eva uses both pronouns) does next!"

These comments highlight how Victor's work as a director and actor for Sorry, Baby is gaining attention. Other cast members, including Hedges and Ackie, are also being lauded for their roles.
