James Gunn's Superman is only a few months away from release, and we might have already realized the reason Lex Luthor hates the Son of Krypton. The recently released official trailer shows many characters that we had already seen in the teaser trailer, which was released nearly five months before it, be it the Hawkgirl, Guy Gardner, or Mr. Terrific. We also get to see The Engineer and Ultraman along with the Secretary of Defence, who's against Clark Kent for illegally entering another country. Clark argues that he went there to stop a war, but it doesn't seem to help his case.
The trailer offers another surprise in the form of Hammer of Boravia, who will be one of the villains standing against the Kryptonian hero. We don't get to see who is underneath its metal armor. So, the fans have started speculating who might have sent it or manipulated it to fight the hero. Some of them are saying that it must be Lex Luthor's creation, considering how much he hates Superman. Even though no such detail has been officially revealed as of yet, it doesn't stop the fans from wondering how it plays out in the bigger picture.
Regardless, there is one constructive thing that the trailer offers related to Lex Luthor. Unlike the teaser trailer, it offers him a dialogue that seemingly gives away a key detail about why he hates the Son of Krypton. Lex Luthor says,
"Superman...he's not a man, he's an it. And somehow become the focal point of the entire world's conversation... I will not accept that."
Why does Lex Luthor in James Gunn's Superman hate the hero? Here's what the trailer revealed so far
Superman has been interpreted through a number of iterations. Even though the central premise has been more or less the same, some factors have been changed over time based on who's spearheading the project and what their motive is. Some artists wanted to show him as an invincible and perfect hero, while others decided to show him as someone capable of flaws and insecurities. Of course, he has often been shown as a bespectacled nervous nervous-wreck of a man gaining superhuman abilities. However, there have been a few changes made to his personality and his overall arc.
The same applies to the other characters in his story, which means the same applies to his arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor. Based on the new trailer, James Gunn's film presents him as an evil man jealous of the hero for his Kryptonian heritage. That's why he considers Clark Kent inferior and acts simply through his need for domination. At least that's what the trailer implies about his character. It shows him enter the hero's Fortress of Solitude with The Engineer to kill the robots, presumably to emotionally hurt him.
The two-and-a-half-minute trailer offers a glimpse at Lex Luthor's psychological schemes to put Superman down because he is jealous of the fame this hero receives. That might just be the reason he hates the son of Krypton. The fans will get all the answers in a few months.
James Gunn's Superman is scheduled to be released in the US theaters on July 11, 2025.
