Kristen Stewart's debut feature, The Chronology of Water, has greatly impressed the audience. It garnered a spectacular score of a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film was showcased at this year's Cannes Film Festival 2025, and has made a mark already. It stars Imogen Poots, Thora Birch, Earl Cave, Jim Belushi, Kim Gordon and many others.
The film is derived from the autobiography of American writer Lidia Yuknavitch, which looks into her resilient and emancipatory journey of freedom from an abusive household and reclaiming her own life. A proficient swimmer, Lidia finds her inner power in the world of literature.
Its synopsis, as per RT, goes as follows:
Brought up in an environment torn apart by violence and alcohol, Lidia Yuknavitch seemed destined for self-destruction and failure until words offered her unexpected freedom in the form of literature. The Chronology of Water, adapted from Yuknavitch's autobiographical bestseller, follows Lidia's journey to find her own voice in an exploration of how trauma can be transformed into art through re-possessing our own bloody histories, particularly those uniquely experienced by the bodies of women and girls.

After winning hearts in the industry with her acting prowess, Kristen Stewart is set out to make a significant mark as a filmmaker as well. Her debut feature film, The Chronology of Water, has received an impressive rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Looking at its brilliant score, we can expect the film to certainly blow our minds when it releases on the big screen.
As reported by Deadline, the film is expected to be released by the end of this year, in December 2025. The precise release date is not revealed yet. The domestic release is slated to happen in December, with its prolonged release to take place in January 2026. The distribution of the film shall be handled by Les Films du Losange in France and The Forge in the United States.
As per the outlet, The Chronology of Water has received immense love at the Cannes Film Festival. It was recorded to have been honored with a standing ovation lasting for a duration of 6 and a half minutes. Kristen Stewart spoke at the festival by stating what the film is about:
“About iteration. Getting up and trying again. Repossessing your body, your desires, your ambitions and your dreams. I wanted to create a form that was unruly and, again, hard to pin down.”
The BAFTA winning actor is well recognized for her work in films including Panic Room (2002), Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005), The Twilight Saga films (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), Clouds of Sils Maria (2014), Charlie's Angels (2019), Spencer (2021), and many more.
