The Conjuring: Last Rites is all set to conclude the supernatural horror franchise that began with James Wan's 2013 film The Conjuring, which introduced the world to the work of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
After a decade of successful run through its mainline narratives, alongside the spin-off projects about Annabelle and The Nun, the core franchise is supposed to end with the 2025 film. Over the years, the films have amassed a devoted fan following who have been obsessively talking about their events to make sense of their terrifying tragedies.
That's why the final Conjuring film must be a huge responsibility for the person in charge of its creative reins. In this case, it's director Michael Chaves, who previously helmed franchise installments, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) and The Nun II (2023). So, he considers it his honor to direct The Conjuring: Last Rites, the potential last film.
In a conversation with ScreenRant, Chaves let his feelings be known about handling this big responsibility. He said,
"It was amazing. It was such a great honor. It's funny because that's what James Wan said when I signed on. He said, "You're going to have directed more Conjuring movies than I have. Why do you want to do it?" And I told him that I just thought it's so rare to be able to do a movie like this, to tell a final chapter, to tell an ending."
"We're in this business where you're always trying to make a movie that'll spin off and create sequels and a universe, and that's always the shameless goal."
The Conjuring: Last Rites director shares what he hopes the film to provide for the fans
Michael Chaves is spearheading a Conjuring project considered to be the final of this saga that has been in the making for over a decade. That's why, in a conversation with ScreenRant, he revealed how grateful he is for this wonderful opportunity. With his third feature film in the franchise, he becomes the person to have directed the most projects from this universe.
With this film, Chaves surpasses James Wan's record, who has directed two Conjuring movies that set the stage for the next installments. Despite this honor, Chaves hopes nothing more than for the fans to "fall in love with" these movies and "keep on watching" them over and over. In the ScreenRant interview, he said,
"We just want to create something that people will fall in love with and keep on watching. We've had such a great run with a series, and it's been so beloved for 12 years now. The opportunity to bring it to a close and to tell that final chapter is such an incredible honor. I really couldn't miss it."
The Conjuring: Last Rites marks Vera Farmiga's return as Lorraine Warren with Patrick Wilson as Lorraine's husband, Ed. Joining them in this film's cast are Mia Tomlinson as Ed and Loraine's daughter, Judy, Rebecca Calder as Janet Smurl, Ben Hardy as Tony Spera, Taissa Farmiga as Irene Palmer, and Elliot Cowan as Jack Smurl, among others.
The Conjuring fans can watch The Conjuring: Last Rites on September 5, 2025, when it arrives in the US theaters.
