The forthcoming horror film The Conjuring: Last Rites has been given an R rating due to its graphic violence and gore, as reported by Bloody Disgusting.

The filmmakers clearly have no qualms about leaning into the gore once more. As the ninth installment in the Conjuring series, such disturbing imagery is to be expected.

This film is helmed by Michael Chaves, who had directed its predecessor, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021). The helmer’s other two feature directorials also explored the horror genre, including The Curse of La Llorona (2019) and The Nun II (2023).

The upcoming horror film The Conjuring: Last Rites has been given an R rating for its violent and gory visuals, as reported by Bloody Disgusting.

As per the outlet, even the last film of the franchise met with the same rating for similar reasons, involving irksome visuals of violence and terror. The Conjuring films often draw on real cases investigated by famed paranormal experts Lorraine and Ed Warren.

Every film is given a rating based on the content it carries. As per High Point NC, films that are rated R, or Restricted, are those which involve mature content. This includes violence, gore, nudity, substance abuse, as well as the usage of profanities.

For the young audience who are eager to watch The Conjuring: Last Rites, it is mandatory for parents to supervise and accompany their child if they are below 17 years of age.

The film follows the plot of how Lorraine and Ed Warren strive to solve their final case. The real-life case of the Smurl Haunting serves as the impetus of the story. Between the years 1974 and 1989, a couple, Janet and Jack Smurl, claimed that a demonic entity had entered their home.

Its synopsis, as per the official website of the film, goes as follows:

The Conjuring: Last Rites delivers another thrilling chapter of the iconic Conjuring cinematic universe, based on real events. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reunite for one last case as renowned, real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in a powerful and spine-chilling addition to the global box office-breaking franchise.

Helmer Michael Chaves, while speaking to Collider, elucidated his vision for the making of this film:

“It was one of the last cases that they actually did, so chronologically it worked out. What I wanted to do — what everyone wanted to do — was really a return to back-to-basics haunted house story that really made The Conjuring this incredible horror franchise. And I think that was something that, even though I think we enjoyed the idea of the thriller, you know, cat and mouse, supernatural serial killer element of Conjuring 3, I think that for the end we wanted something that felt like a return to that classic Conjuring experience.”

The Conjuring: Last Rites is releasing on 5th September 2025. Along with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, the film also stars Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, and many others.
