The Hobbit star Orlando Bloom is making his big-screen return this September with the upcoming psychological thriller titled The Cut. British filmmaker Sean Ellis is at the helm of the project alongside screenwriter Justin Bull.

Outlander lead Caitriona Balfe is also a part of the cast of this highly anticipated thriller entry, which, according to Deadline, filmed across various locations in Nevada back in 2023. The story revolves around a retired boxer whose journey back to the arena pushes him beyond his limits. The official synopsis of The Cut, per IMDb, reads:

"A retired boxer returns to the ring for one last shot at the title but only if he can make the weight. Holed up in a room in Las Vegas he embarks on an intensive and illegal weight cut program with an unscrupulous trainer."

When will The Cut be released?

The Cut had its early screening at the Toronto International Film Festival last September. However, the thriller will have a theatrical release in the United States just a year after its world premiere, on September 5, 2025, with Republic Pictures holding the distribution rights.

What do we know about the plot of The Cut?

The Cut centers on a boxer (played by Orlando Bloom) who says no to retirement and decides to come back to the fighting ring. His initial journey is driven by his wife, Caitlin (portrayed by Caitriona Balfe), who also trains him to find a spot in the Las Vegas Championship title race.

But the real story unravels once 'The Boxer' arrives in Vegas and comes across Boz (John Turturro), an established coach who is infamous for his stringent training that also comes with a rampant weight loss practice.

The Cut is not only a story about a physical fight but also the psychological turmoil of a boxer who has to deal with the struggles of returning to the arena. Will 'The Boxer' be able to survive the grueling journey and make 'The Cut'? It all remains to be seen.

While talking to Deadline in an interview back in 2024, lead star Orlando Bloom had mentioned his weight when the project kicked off, saying:

"I was about 185 pounds. [Laughs.] Sorry to use pounds and not stone!"

He further shared details about his intense training routine "about three months prior to filming." To quote his exact words:

"We worked with a great nutritionist called Philip Goglia. He started me on a program about three months prior to filming, and I tiered down from there. I was eating more food than I’d expected, in order to maintain the muscle but drop the weight."

Who is in the cast of The Cut?

Orlando Bloom (known for his work in The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises) will lead the cast of The Cut, playing the protagonist, a retired boxer who takes up fighting once again.
