Pixar revealed that the first Toy Story film will be re-released in theaters, a year ahead of the theatrical release of Toy Story 5. The animated film, initially released in 1995, will return in theaters on September 12, 2025. It will offer the fans another chance to rewatch this old classic on the big screens almost thirty years after its premiere. In their X post, Pixar said,

"Mark your calendars! Disney & Pixar’s Toy Story returns to the BIG SCREEN September 12."

The latest report from FeatureFirst suggests that the studio will also tease the first footage of their upcoming Toy Story 5, alongside the first film's re-release. It's not clear what the footage will reveal, but the publication believes it will include the exclusive clip previously shared at Disney's Destination D23 event.

With the fifth installment, Pixar and Disney are all set to take a big leap with their creative direction by introducing new villain/s, relevant to the times we live in. Unlike before, the toys will compete for Bonnie's attention with a digital tablet, to represent the current age, where kids are drawn more to the new technology than to the usual toys.

What else do we know about Toy Story 5?

The latest installment of the Toy Story franchise will map out new challenges in front of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the whole gang of toys, which now belong to Bonnie. In the past, some reports suggested that an army of malfunctioning Buzz Lightyear action figures would be one of the antagonists in the new movie.

In line with this, the Pixar CCO, Pete Docter, shared some insights into the plot of Toy Story 5, including some of its crucial characters, and the new challenges they will be facing in the upcoming animated film. During his recent appearance at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Docter also revealed the first footage of the movie.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the clip showed several Buzz Lightyear figures washed up on a shore from a shipping container. It reminds them of their allegiance to Star Command and compels them to build a raft to flee the island. It all ties in with the previous reports of these figurines opening up to their darker sides.

Apart from that, Docter also shared a few details about the frog-shaped digital tablet named Lily Pad, which will be an adversary ahead of the traditional toys like Woody.

Here's what he said about this tablet during a presentation in New York:

"It's a new tech tablet, which allows Bonnie to chat with their friends and play games and other things too. But Lily can also be a bit sneaky and prickly to be around. And because, in her mind, it's a lot better to be socialized, and Bonnie needs to move on from toys."

Some other reports also hinted at Jessie's more substantial role in the story as opposed to the previous stories, when Woody and Buzz were the lead characters. Docter confirmed that Joan Cusack, who previously voiced this cowgirl rag doll, will return to play the part. Conan O'Brien is also joining the cast as Smarty Pants, reportedly a potty training toy.

Andrew Stanton, known for directing Finding Nemo and WALL-E, is directing Toy Story 5.
