Here's everything about the Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix project, The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2
The original name of The Mitchells vs. the Machines was Connected. However, as COVID hit the world in 2020, audience participation at the theaters was understandably sparse. Hence, the production company, Sony Pictures Animation, had passed on its commercial rights to Netflix, and therefore, the film made its streaming release.
Hence, both film companies have joined hands once again to continue the story of the Mitchell family. Along with them, the producers of the original film, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's production company, Lord Miller, are also joining in to support the film.
According to Variety, both Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation have signed a licensing agreement for its sequel, and will have a more in-depth collaboration this time. Guillermo Martinez and JP Sans will direct The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2.
Martinez is the head of the story in the original film and has also been involved in the creation of We Bare Bears (2015-2018), Missing Link (2019), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse (2023), K-Pop Demon Hunters (2025), and many more. JP Sans has directed the 2025 animated film The Bad Guys 2 and has also served as an animator for films including Trolls World Tour (2020), Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (2023), etc.
The screenplay of The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 is penned by the sister duo Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneux. Aditya Sood, the President of Lord Miller, along with the director of the original film, Mike Rianda, will be the executive producers of the film.
The predecessor film had this quality in its animation that looked hand-painted, because the same process that was used in Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) was incorporated into its making. Upon its release, it was noted for its comedic elements, the performance of the voice actors, and its LGBTQIA+ representation. It has garnered a rating of a whopping 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 7.6/10 on IMDb.
Hopefully, in The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2, the makers will carry forward the brilliance of its first film, or in fact, take it a couple of notches higher. The film's production is expected to commence at the beginning of 2026.
