The Old Guard 2 cast and character guide: Who plays whom in Netflix's upcoming action sequel?

The Old Guard 2 is an upcoming sequel to the electrifying 2020 film, The Old Guard, that premiered on Netflix. The franchise is based on the comics created by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez. The sequel is expected to be a darker and even more electrifying chapter, bringing back the immortal warriors trying to save the world.

The upcoming film's official synopsis, per IMDb, reads:

"Andy leads immortal warriors against a powerful enemy threatening their group. They grapple with the resurfacing of a long-lost immortal, complicating their mission to safeguard humanity."

Directed by Victoria Mahoney, The Old Guard 2 brings back almost every cast member to the screen for another fight to protect humanity. The cast includes Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Veronica Van, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, among others.

Apart from them, Uma Thurman and Henry Golding are joining the cast as Discord and Tuah, two immortal mercenaries with a moral code that may or may not jeopardize Andy's mission.

Charlize Theron as Andy

Charlize Theron returns as Andy, or Andromache of Scythia, and she will have to face bigger challenges this time. Toward the end of the first film, we see her realizing that her immortality is fading and her regenerative powers are diminishing. This implies she will eventually die. Yet, it doesn't deter her from taking down the enemies. So, the new film will show her fighting an internal battle as she gears up to accept any challenge for the greater good.

Apart from this franchise, Theron has been a part of Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Atomic Blonde (2017), and Fast 8 (2017). She has also won an Oscar for her performance as a traumatized serial killer in Monster (2003).

KiKi Layne as Nile

KiKi Layne returns to the battlefield as Nile, an immortal warrior who can rapidly heal. It makes her prone to become a target of the forces trying to learn more about her condition, so that they can attack or exploit her powers. During her conversation with Tudum, she revealed how her character has evolved since the first part. She said,

“In the first film, Nile is the newbie. She doesn’t know anything, she is asking a lot of questions. In the second film, she’s still asking questions — that’s just who she is, she’s a very curious person — but she’s found her place within the team. We get to witness the things that she may have learned from the team over the months: new skills, new weapons.”

Veronica Van as Quynh

In The Old Guard 2, Veronica Van (formerly Veronica Ngô) plays Quynh, a ferocious immortal warrior who has turned against Andy after suffering through torturous prison time at the bottom of the ocean. So, once an inseparable close friend and ally of Andy, Quynh is out to seek revenge against her. During her conversation with Tudum, the actress shed light on the emotional beats of Quynh's journey in the second chapter,

“We pick up with Quynh right where we left her in the last film. For her, the cruelest thing about being underwater for so long is seeing that everybody moved on. When she comes back to search for Andy after 500 years, she’s carrying so much emotion: missing, loving, longing, hatred, betrayal.”

This is not the first time Veronica Ngô has been a part of an action-packed franchise. She has previously starred in Furie (2019), Furies (2022), and The Princess (2022) as a ferocious fighter.

Uma Thurman as Discord

During a conversation with Tudum, Thruman revealed how Discord plays out in the established equation of The Old Guard 2. The character is driven by her hope to seek revenge against humans.

“Discord is shrouded in mystery throughout the movie. She’s an immortal. It turns out that she’s one of the earliest and possibly the oldest immortal, and she’s surfaced after hundreds of years. As one of the oldest immortals, she’s been alone the longest and has come back with a lot of angst and frustration in her motivation — not a great fan of humanity, very unlike the movie’s hero, Andy.”

Thurman has been the fierce Bride in the Kill Bill film series. She is widely known for her roles in Pulp Fiction (1994), Gattaca (1997), and more.
