The Social Reckoning is the official title of the forthcoming sequel to The Social Network. The film is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, who served as the writer of the 2010 film. After years of speculation and reports, the film finally has a title.

The first one was directed by David Fincher and chronicled the inception of Facebook (now known as Meta). In recent years, Sorkin has stated that he wants to take the story forward. The makers have also finalized several cast members, including Jeremy Strong, and they have revealed the release date. So let’s find out all the details.

When will The Social Reckoning release?

The Social Network II, now officially titled The Social Reckoning, will be released theatrically on October 9, 2026, by Sony Pictures. Aaron Sorkin is writing and directing the film and is also producing it with Peter Rice, Todd Black, and Stuart Besser. Production is slated to start in October this year.

Who is starring in The Social Reckoning?

Several names have been announced who will be playing real-life characters in the film. Succession fame actor Jeremy Strong will play the role of tech billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, previously portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg in the first installment. Other cast members include Mikey Madison as Frances Haugen and Jeremy Allen White as Jeff Horwitz. Comedian-actor Bill Burr has also been cast for an undisclosed role.

What is The Social Reckoning about?

The Social Reckoning is based on a series of articles titled The Facebook Files, published in The Wall Street Journal by Jeff Horwitz. These articles chronicle studies revealing the negative impact of social media on children. They also discuss how Facebook was used to spread misinformation and contributed to the January 2021 attack on the Capitol building.

In April 2024, Sorkin said:

“Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible because that is what will increase engagement and because that is what will get you to, what they call inside the hallways of Facebook, the infinite scroll.”

Pointing towards Facebook's role in the Capitol attack, he said:

“There is supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity, there isn’t. It’s just growth so if Mark Zuckerberg wakes up tomorrow and realises that there is nothing you can buy for $120bn that you can’t buy for $119bn, so how about if I make a little less money, I will tune up integrity and I will tune down growth.”

The Social Network was based on the book The Accidental Billionaires, which focused on the founding of Facebook. Directed by David Fincher, the film was released on October 1, 2010. It received positive critical response and grossed $224.9 million. The film also won Oscars for Best Editing, Original Score, and Adapted Screenplay.

The Social Reckoning will hit theaters on October 9, 2026.
