DC Studios Co-CEO and Superman director James Gunn had some promising updates regarding the character's next project on Wednesday, August 13, 2025. During the New York premiere of the acclaimed HBO Max series Peacemaker's second season, Gunn had encouraging words regarding the Last Son of Krypton's next appearance in the DCU.

When he was asked about the status of a follow-up featuring David Corenswet, Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter:

“I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’ The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”

What do James Gunn's words mean for the DCU Superman?

James Gunn is regarded as one of the quickest writers, and it looks like he has earned his reputation with this untitled DCU project. But one of the most intriguing aspects of the revelation is his usage of the word "saga". That's because of the revelation from August 7, 2025. Reports published across various online publications revealed David Zaslav's words during a company call.

Zaslav was reportedly quoted as saying that James Gunn would be the writer and director for the next installment featuring the "Super family". However, the usage of the word "saga" gives the upcoming DCU project featuring Corenswet's Man of Steel a sense of weight. While the term "Super Family" sounds frivolous, "saga" indicates that the upcoming project featuring the character will be epic in the vein of The Lord of the Rings.

Other than that update, James Gunn has a lot of promises for Peacemaker Season 2:

The Hollywood Reporter interview veered into the varying tone between Peacemaker Season 2 and the DCU movie released in July. Gunn, revealing that Peacemaker Season 2 is important for the DCU, went on to say this:

“It’s a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker; it should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it’s incredibly important. Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that we’ve already met in Superman. I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker, so I’m so excited for people to see it.”

One of the things the movie and Peacemaker Season 2 share in common is the pocket dimension, dubbed the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC). For the uninitiated, the QUC is seen for the first time in Peacemaker Season 1, where Christopher Smith/Peacemaker uses it as a storage unit.

However, the movie headlined by David Corenswet's Big Blue Boy Scout, Lex Luthor, uses the QUC to imprison the Man of Steel and his opponents. Now, it seems that Christopher uses his QUC to access an Earth in which he is respected.
