The Avengers

After a long and emotionally devastating hiatus following Avengers: Endgame, Earth's Mightiest Heroes are finally reassembling in Avengers: Doomsday. With the deaths of Black Widow and Iron Man, and Captain America's quiet retirement, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has spent the Multiverse Saga lacking its central heartbeat. But the tides are shifting. In Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson officially stepped into the role of Captain America, and the film’s ending, with the post-credits scene in Thunderbolts, confirms that he’s been tasked with assembling a new Avengers lineup.

We already have Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson and Danny Ramirez’ Joaquin Torres to be the new Falcon, as well as Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, and Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi as confirmed members. Now the speculation begins about the familiar names and if they will be a part of the film, such as Bruce Banner, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and maybe even Spider-Man. While none of these actors’ returns have been confirmed, fans are still in anticipation.

With Sam Wilson leading a team that blends legacy with fresh energy, Avengers: Doomsday could very well be the rebirth the franchise needs.

Fantastic Four

After an extended wait and immense buildup, the Fantastic Four are finally entering the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday. Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm will bring their personalities and sharp powers to the team. Their knowledge of the multiverse makes them an important piece of the puzzle and will certainly be an aid in trying to stop Doctor Doom's plans.

The Fantastic Four's history with cosmic threats and the fact that they are already a family is vital to the Avengers. Their relationship with the other teams, the X-Men especially, as well as the Thunderbolts, will be fun to watch. It will certainly be exciting to see the different hero cultures blend into one in the MCU.

The X-Men

The X-Men's long-awaited insertion into the MCU is finally taking place in Avengers: Doomsday. The mutants add a different angle to the plot, given that they have known oppression, hatred, and segregation since their inception.

Kelsey Grammer is returning as Hank McCoy, AKA Beast. Patrick Stewart is returning as Charles Xavier, and Ian McKellen is joining the team as Magneto. Alan Cumming is returning as Nightcrawler, and Rebecca Romijn is returning as Mystique. James Marsden will play Cyclops, and finally, Channing Tatum will be making his long-awaited debut as Gambit, adding flair and kinetic power to the mutant lineup in Avengers: Doomsday.

It would certainly be interesting to note how they merge with the rest of the teams, given their differences in species and powers. The alliance will surely pave the way for future collaborations in the MCU, making exciting new projects possible in the future.

The Wakandans

Although the Wakandan people may not technically be called a superhero team, in Avengers: Doomsday, they are joining the group of heroes to face one of the biggest threats Earth will encounter. Kevin Feige confirmed during a panel at 2025's CinemaCon that the Wakanda warriors will have a key role in the film, and he lined them up with the Avengers and other returning groups.

The elite fighters of Wakanda will always rise to the occasion when the fate of the world is at stake, as has been shown before. Also confirmed to be back are Letitia Wright's Shuri, who is the new Black Panther, and Winston Duke's M'Baku, whose physical and leadership capabilities are getting stronger with each of his appearances. Just the presence of these two alone could change a battle. Hopefully, we can expect more. And in addition to the above, both fan-favorite fighters, Danai Gurira's Okoye and Lupita Nyong'o's Nakia, are expected to get back in the fight, although not confirmed as of yet.

Thunderbolts (New Avengers)

The ending of Thunderbolts* cleared up the mystery behind the asterisk from the title, as we discovered that Valentina Allegra de Fontaine had rebranded the team as the New Avengers after they had saved the world from the Void. After her original plan to control the Sentry served as the impetus for forming the team, it made total sense for this to be a pivot to her plan. The post-credits scene confirmed that the team has accepted this new name and is evidently located in the original Avengers Tower.

The confirmed cast includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker / U.S. Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr / Ghost, and Lewis Pullman as Bob Reynolds aka the Sentry or more frighteningly, the Void. The team of anti-heroes and former foes now finds themselves on the line between chaos and redemption.

The post-credit scene with the Thunderbolts hints at a growing conflict with the Avengers, led by Sam Wilson, considering that Wilson has supposedly copyrighted the Avengers name. It creates an interesting conflict in Avengers: Doomsday, which could lead to alliances shifting and beliefs amidst all the chaos.

Avengers: Doomsday will be in theaters on 1 May 2026.
