Netflix's recent Indonesian zombie horror film The Elixir is already garnering a lot of social media attention just after a day of its release.
The story centers on a chaotic family and their business (a herbal medicine firm) somewhere in the rural parts of Indonesia.
The head of the company, Dimin (who is also apparently the patriarch calling the shots), is all worked up with the medical trials of a new herbal liquid produced by his own firm, Wani Waras. As it appears, this novel liquid aka Abadi Nan Jaya (or basically The Elixir) is a youth serum, that is, it can reverse age.
However, Dimin runs the test on himself first and it leads to an unprecedented viral outbreak - a deadly zombie infestation. These unknown creatures feed on fresh human blood and are also triggered by noise.
However, there is one unique thing about slowing them down - rain. Apparently, when the zombies come in contact with rain, they get trapped in a strange limbo while moving their limbs to the tunes of the falling drops.
The zombies seen in The Elixir can apparently be rendered inactive by rain
As the plot of The Elixir progresses, we see the entire village suffering from a sudden outbreak of the viral infection turning hundreds of individuals into flesh-eating zombies. While Dimin's daughter Kenes tries to find a way to safety with her brother Bambang and reach the nearby police station, the former's husband Rudi, his son Raihan and Karina (Dimin's wife) get stuck in another house.
Rudi almost gets killed while trying to fight one such creature and soon after he barely escapes, it is revealed that he has also been bitten. As the infection starts to spread, Rudi asks Karina to take care of Nes and his only son, Han.
Rudi soon transforms into a zombie, leaving Nes and Han in a precarious situation. They somehow manage to escape for the time being and take shelter inside the same house locking Rudi up in another room. It is at this point that we see a young woman named Ningsih (whom we see in the very first sequence of The Elixir).
Ningsih and Nes try to hold the ground while the local police station has already been surrounded by hundreds of these deadly creatures. Here we see Nes, Bambang and police officer Rahman (who is also Ningsih's fiancé) trying to keep the zombies at bay and finally find a way to distract them - fire crackers!
Though the plan initially works and the three of them run towards the deserted vehicles in the middle of the road (in an attempt to escape), the monsters soon turn back and pin them from all sides. With their protective shields and guns, Nes, Bambang and Rahman fight using all their strength to push the zombies towards the motorbike.
Just as the three were about to give up, thunder crashed across the sky. The zombies are seen reacting to the sound and in a shocking turn of events, they become dormant the moment it starts raining. As it seems, they got stuck in some limbo while moving their body slowly to the falling rain - not to mention that they stopped attacking Nes and the others.
It is at this point that The Elixir drops a major hint about how the zombies behave. There is a way to kill them: shooting at their heads. However, when the numbers are large, there is only one way to slow them down - rain. So, as the movie ends on a cliffhanger with the magical serum having reached Jakarta city, a lot of questions naturally come up.
Has the virus spread to the cities as well? How can the situation be controlled if there is a nationwide outbreak? The obvious answer is artificial rain. It does not kill the zombies or scare them away but it helps to slow them down and render them inactive. It can also be a way to capture the lethal creatures to carry out scientific experiments and study the virus (to find a cure) which is clearly a direct consequence of consuming The Elixir.
