Thunderbolts* is the latest outing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is the 36th entry in the overall franchise. Helmed by Jake Schreier, this superhero film revolves around the namesake group of supervillains that assemble together for a mission. Here's the official synopsis:
After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.
The film was supposed to have a different post-credit scene, and we are glad it did not pan out. So let's find out what it was.
Thunderbolts* had a different post-credit scene initially
The post-credit sequence of Thunderbolts* sets the stage for Marvel's forthcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. But the makers could have taken a different direction. The film's director, Jake Schreier, gave an interview to Collider to talk about the earlier post-credit scene that it might have had. He said,
"We had a bunch of different Alexei ideas. I think the first one I had was I wanted to do the day Mindy p**ped — was that [screenwriter] Eric [Pearson]'s idea? If it was Eric’s idea then he deserves all the credit. — like a VHS video of Alexei yelling at the ref when the p**p happened [this references a story both Yelena and Alexei told in which a teammate of Yelena's had an accident in midfield]."
He added,
"We ran into this thing where, in Black Widow, he doesn't have an accent. There's this kind of funny inconsistency where Alexei can definitely speak perfect English because he did at the beginning of Black Widow, but now has this accent. The accent is amazing. You don’t want to get rid of the accent, but it would have been very strange to return this audience, who may or may not have seen Black Widow recently, to a time when he spoke perfect English in Ohio. So, it felt like we couldn't do that, but something with him."
As described by Jake, the post-credit scene was supposed to feature feces. Looking at the overall grim tone of the film, it would not sit well with the storyline and would possibly ruin the experience. The film that delves into the mental health struggles of its supervillains should ideally not end with a scene involving feces. So we are glad the makers decided to change the scene.
The post-credit scene of Thunderbolts* does feature the Thunderbolts (rebranded as the "New Avengers") observing the Fantastic Four's ship approaching the earth, which is a key setup for Avengers: Doomsday. There is also a mid-credit scene that features the entire team of Thunderbolts* just hanging out.
The film, alternatively titled The New Avengers, is written by Eric Pearson and Jonanna Calo, while Kevin Feige is the producer. The cast members of the film include:
- Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
- Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, aka Winter Soldier
- Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov, aka Taskmaster
- Wyatt Russell as John Walker, aka U.S. Agent
- Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel
- Lewis Pullman as Bob Reynolds/Sentry/Void
- David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov, aka Red Guardian
- Chris Bauer as Holt
Avengers: Doomsday will feature Robert Downey Jr. portraying the villain Victor von Doom, aka Doctor Doom. He played Iron Man/Tony Stark in the earlier phase of the MCU. The character dies in Endgame but manages to stop Thanos. Besides him, the film will also feature several actors reprising their superhero characters from the MCU.
