More details on Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s death have been released. The 54-year-old actor was out swimming off the coast of Costa Rica when he tragically drowned. A July 23, 2025, report from ABC News states that Warner, known for his roles as Theodore Huxtable in the critically acclaimed television series The Cosby Show, was on vacation with his wife and daughter when the unfortunate incident occurred.

According to the news outlet, surfers saw the actor and his daughter struggling in the water after getting caught by a rip current and immediately rushed to their aid. While a surfer carried Warner’s daughter to safety, a volunteer lifeguard moved Warner to shore.

Police revealed that the actor was given 45 minutes of CPR. Per Police report, an autopsy has been concluded on Malcolm Jamal-Warner and his cause of death was revealed by the Forensic Pathology Department to be asphyxiation by accidental submersion.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner rose to fame for portraying Huxtable’s son in the iconic television sitcom series The Cosby Show at just age thirteen. He went on to star in the series from 1984 till 1992. He grew up on the set and was 21 when he left.

In his Television Academy interview, Malcolm-Jamal Warner expressed that he was grateful to have made a name for himself outside The Cosby Show’s fame:

"I'd say my proudest achievement is being able to have a post-Cosby life and post-Cosby career and still have my head on as straight as possible."

He was also content over the kind of life he’d lived:

"I've had such an awesome life. You know, I literally, I've got my ups and downs and all of that, but if I die tomorrow, I know I would go with a smile on my face."

He added that he hadn’t stepped over others while progressing in his career, and he had made amends for his mistakes:

"I haven't wronged anybody to get ahead, and people that I may have hurt or wronged unintentionally, I've had the opportunity to own up to those things and be responsible for my part."

Warner also starred in popular shows and films including Reed Between The Lines, 9-1-1, and most recently The Resident.
