Looks like Spidey fans might get a grounded movie with Spider-Man: Brand New Day after all! The film, releasing on July 31, 2026, was initially scheduled to release after Avengers: Doomsday, which was initially scheduled to release on May 1, 2026. However, on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Disney shocked fans by announcing the delay of both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Now, Avengers: Doomsday will be theatrically released on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027. Initially, both of these movies were set to release in May of 2026 and 2027, respectively. While the wait for the two Avengers projects will be longer, this delay might be a gain for Spider-Man fans. Now, the story for Spider-Man: Brand New Day might be more grounded.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day's possible grounded story explained:
As mentioned before, Avengers: Doomsday was going to be released on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars was to be released on May 7, 2027. This previous release schedule would mean that Spider-Man: Brand New Day was releasing between Doomsday and Secret Wars.
While it could've been possible that Brand New Day, much like 2018's Ant-Man and the Wasp, could be set before the events of Avengers: Doomsday, rumors circulating the internet suggested that movies after Doomsday will be set after the events of the movie. Thus, there were rumors that Marvel and Sony had different ideas for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Marvel and Tom Holland were hopeful for a more grounded Spider-Man 4, while Sony wanted a multiversal story in the vein of Spider-Man: No Way Home. This is why the news of the Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars delay might be a blessing in disguise for the Web-head fans who were hoping for a more realistic Spider-Man movie like 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
A grounded Spidey flick also makes sense, considering Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the comic the movie shares its title with, published back in 2008, was a comparatively grounded tale after the status-quo-altering, controversial Spider-Man comic book, Spider-Man: One More Day.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day explained:
As stated before, Brand New Day was published after Spider-Man: One More Day. In the controversial 2007 storyline, the Marvel editorial team decided to shake up Peter Parker's life in a major way by erasing an important aspect of Peter Parker's life: his marriage to Mary Jane Watson by making a deal with Mephisto, i.e., the devil in the Marvel Universe.
This 2008 storyline followed Peter Parker, unaware of his deal with Mephisto, having to contend with a new supervillain, Menace. Thus, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is coming off the heels of No Way Home, might follow Holland's Peter Parker struggle in life after Doctor Strange's memory-erasing spell made everyone in the world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man.
Brand New Day is set to be directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings helmer Destin Daniel Cretton, who said this at the 2025 Cinema Con panel:
“Everyday right now, I’m exploring the next stage of this amazing character with a team of incredible artists of the world. How to swing, how to create an emotional story and a ride we haven’t seen before.”
So, will Brand New Day be realistic?
For now, we can't say whether the fourth Spider-Man movie will be a full-blown sci-fi multiversal adventure. However, considering the previous two Spidey flicks were multiversal adventures (No Way Home and Across the Spider-Verse), and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is releasing on June 4, 2027, Brand New Day could distinguish itself from other movies featuring the character by being grounded.
