Brad Pitt lost his mother, Jane, on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 84. The announcement of Jane Etta Pitt’s passing was made by her granddaughter, Sydney, via an emotional Instagram tribute.
Brad had given his mum a sweet shoutout just weeks before during the promo tour for his latest film, F1. During an appearance on an episode of Today with Savannah Guthrie, he mentioned that his mother watches the show every morning. He added:
''I've got to say hi to my mom because she watches you every morning. To Jane Pitt. Love you, Mom, he said as he blew a kiss to the camera.
Jane occasionally accompanied Brad to public events over the years, though she generally maintained a low public profile.
More about Brad Pitt's mother
Jane was a former schoolteacher and had attended Oklahoma Baptist University as a cheerleader, where she met her husband, William Alvin “Bill” Pitt. The two married on August 11, 1962, and had three children, Brad, Doug, and Julie. As per Jane's obituary posted online, she died only six days before she and her husband would have celebrated 63 years of marriage, and just one week before her 85th birthday.
Jane was an educator at heart, and after her children grew up, she ventured back into the education field. She became one of the first educators in a program called "Parents As Teachers" in Springfield, where she helped many families understand how their children grow and develop.
Her obituary also stated that she was talented at painting, and it was her favorite way to express herself. She shared her love of art with her grandchildren, spending special time with them doing crafts and teaching them how to paint.
Jane had made some notable appearances with Brad during public events, including her 2014 appearance with Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Bill Pitt at the premiere of Unbroken, a movie directed by his then-wife, Angelina Jolie. She had also attended the premiere of the film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, in 2008, at Mann’s Village Theatre in Westwood, California.
As per ABC News, in 2012, Jane got public attention for writing an article in the Springfield News-Leader. In it, she said that Christians should vote for Mitt Romney for president. This stirred some controversy and was widely reported.
In the emotional tribute, Sydney wrote:
''My sweet Grammy, Jane Etta, we were not ready for you to go yet but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier. If you knew Grammy, you knew she had the biggest heart. She cared deeply for everyone and everything, no questions asked.''
Jane is survived by her husband, children, and several grandchildren.
