Canadian film director and screenwriter Denis Villeneuve is going to direct the next James Bond film for Amazon MGM Studios. The Golden Globes-nominated director initially started his career in Quebec cinema by directing French-language dramas, and later on moved to English-language films.

He directed his debut film, August 32nd on Earth, in 1998. It premiered at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section.

Denis Villeneuve's film-making career has seen incredible growth over the years. He has directed films that have grossed up to $1.8 billion worldwide. Villeneuve has been nominated for numerous awards in the film industry and has directed 11 films and seven short films.

Exploring Denis Villeneuve's film-making career

Denis Villeneuve's career started in 1998 when he made short Canadian films that were predominantly in French. His first movie, August 32nd on Earth, was chosen as the Canadian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 71st Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.

His second film, Maelström, is an absurdist psychological film. It was released in 2000 and received a 71/100 from BFCA and a 66 from Metacritic. Nine years later, he directed Polytechnique, which received a 63 from Metacritic. His last Canadian drama film was Incendies, which was released in 2010. It made $16.1 million at the Box Office and received an 87/100 from BFCA.

Villeneuve transitioned to English-language films in 2013 and directed two films in the same year. These are Prisoner and Enemy, an American crime thriller and a surrealist psychological thriller, respectively. The former made $122.2 million at the Box Office, while the latter made $4.6 million.

Denis directed another thriller film the following year. Sicario is an American action crime thriller that was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing.

He then expanded his work into science fiction films with Arrival. The film was released in 2016, and it received eight Academy Award nominations. It won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing at the 89th Academy Awards.

Denis Villeneuve also directed Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to Blade Runner. It grossed $267.7 million at the Box Office. The latest films directed by Villeneuve are from the Dune series: Dune and Dune: Part Two. They are American epic space opera films that were released in 2021 and 2024, respectively. The former grossed $406.0 million and the latter made $711.8 million at the Box Office.

"Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery. I’m a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he’s sacred territory... I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor."
