A Minecraft Movie has been on a roll since its theatrical release on April 4, setting several box office records. The Jack Black and Jason Momoa starrer's success prompted the studio to announce a sequel within a month of its release.
Helmed by Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, this popcorn flick became a sensation for many reasons, including that "Chicken Jockey" meme trend that led some theater chains to even bring cops into the auditoriums.
A Minecraft Movie is still enjoying a theatrical run in several places, though the film is set to drop online soon. In a recent press report, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced that the movie will be available on digital streaming from May 13, 2025.
It will be available on premium video-on-demand (PVOD). So, the fans who were waiting to have the same fun in the comfort of their homes can have so.
How to watch A Minecraft Movie online?
A Minecraft Movie is not yet available to watch on any streaming platform. However, since Warner Bros handles its distribution, it is expected to be out on Max soon.
Until then, Minecraft fans can rent it online on platforms like Prime Video, AppleTV, and Fandango at Home. As mentioned before, the movie will be available to watch online May 13, 2025, onwards.
At the time of writing this article, it is available to preorder for $24.99 on Prime Video. However, fans can avail of a $5 discount on its PVOD purchase price for the initial 48 hours since it becomes available online.
More about A Minecraft Movie
A Minecraft Movie brings the popular Mojang Studios sandbox game to the screen and it is just as colorful and exciting an adventure. Its official summary reads:
"Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits — Garrett 'The Garbage Man' Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) —f ind themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
This Jack Black starrer has been an incredibly successful affair for Warner Bros. Pictures. Per Box Office Mojo, the film's domestic collection currently stands at $399.8 million. Add the international collection of about $476.4 million, and it totals $876.2 so far. That makes it the second highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide after the Chinese animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2, so far.
Despite this success, the critics greeted the film with less-than-favorable reactions, which dragged down its Rotten Tomatoes rating to 48%. Their consensus reads:
"Ostensibly a film about celebrating creativity, A Minecraft Movie provides a colorful sandbox for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to amusingly romp around in a story curiously constructed from conventional building blocks."
Still, the audience seems to love it, judging from their 86% PopcornMeter rating. Their verdict reads:
"Beyond being a fertile meme-factory, A Minecraft Movie proves how much fun two men with beards can bring to the sandbox."
