The 1968 film, Where Eagles Dare, has a lot of reasons for it to stand fresh to this date. Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton are in them. That makes the first. Apart from the actors, some top filmmakers of the time were also involved in this project. Their work was received well, as the 84% Rotten Tomatoes score indicates.

It was shot using Metrocolor, which is the trade name Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer uses for its processed films. The story is about a rescue operation, but things escalate when some revelations are laid forth to the audience. It's full of spies, not just soldiers.

The captivating plot of the film is complemented by the locations used in the film. The castle, the infamous Schloss Adler, which is a fictional name given to it in the film, stands out particularly. The movie was majorly shot in Austrian locations. We will look at the major ones now.

The most obvious attraction in Where Eagles Dare is, of course, the Schloss Adler, which is actually the Hohenwerfen Castle situated in Werfen, surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps. It is where the U.S. Army Brigadier General George Carnaby (Robert Beatty) is being held. It now belongs to Salzburg. Before this, the House of Habsburg owned it.

Feuerkogel Seilbahn at Ebensee

The cable car scene in the film is shot at Feuerkogel Seilbahn at Ebensee am Traunsee. Feuerkogel is actually a mountain in Ebensee am Traunsee, which is a market town in Austria. This is one of the best action sequences in the film, where Major John Smith (Burton) and Lieutenant Morris Schaffer (Eastwood) try to escape. The close-ups for this sequence were done on soundstages.

The Villa Egger, Lofer

The place is featured when Smith goes to see Heidi Schmidt, played by Ingrid Pitt. Lofer is also a market town and this bed and breakfast is located at a place where scenic beauty is at its peak. Though Austria is filled with sceneries like this, The Villa Egger is one place where one wouldn't want to finish the breakfast while taking in that scenery.

Flugplatz, Aigen im Ennstal

This is where the airport scenes were filmed in Where Eagles Dare and the breathtaking scenery in the background is actually the Grimming mountains. It is considered a prominent mountain of the Alps.

Werfen Train Station

There's not just an airport but a train station too in Where Eagles Dare. The scene where the soldiers have just entered the German Alps and are about to infiltrate the Schloss Adler is shot here. In real life, passengers can again take in the scenic beauty of the region from the transport, which also takes them to places like the Werfen Ice Caves.

MGM-British Studios, Borehamwood, England

Apart from Austria, Where Eagles Dare also uses the MGM-British Studios in England. The escape scene where Burton is driving and Eastwood is providing cover from the chasers was shot here. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer owned it and it was eventually closed in 1970. The facility was once in limbo, during World War II to be precise, but came into operation again after another facility was bought in Borehamwood.
