James Gunn has a favorite among Batman's roster of characters: Bat-Mite.

The DC Studios Co-CEO and filmmaker revealed this to ScreenRant's Ash Crossan during a press junket for his upcoming film, Superman, which is set to release on July 11, 2025. Crossan asked if Gunn had a choice to bring any particular DC character alive on the big screen, which would it be. Gunn responded with Bat-Mite.

In the DC Comics, Bat-Mite is an interdimensional imp who idolizes Batman. Introduced in 1959, Bat-Mite went on to appear in several comics in the 1960s, around the time the campy and silly Adam West Batman series was a rage. Since then, Bat-Mite's role has been downplayed but several writers, including those working on shows featuring the Caped Crusader, have included Bat-Mite.

Even if the character is controversial now, as the popular perception of Gotham's protector as a dark and brooding figure, something as silly as Bat-Mite is exactly the kind of character that would seem to suit James Gunn's sensibilities. The filmmaker humorously added that he loves Bat-Mite so much that he would immediately greenlight Matt Reeves' completed sequel script if it included Bat-Mite!

Several news outlets were invited for the press junket to promote the upcoming DCU movie, Superman. There, Ash Crossan asked Gunn the following question:

"There are a lot of new characters that we meet, and a lot we're going to meet. Is there a niche DC character or story that you think deserves more attention – whether you're developing it or not – just someone you'd love to bring to the forefront?"

James Gunn responded to the question, saying:

"Everybody knows I love Bat-Mite. Bat-Mite's like… my man. He's creepy as hell. I think I’ve got to do something with Bat-Mite someday. I don’t know how to do it – unless Matt’s doing it in his script. I got his script yesterday and haven’t had a chance to read it yet. Maybe Matt Reeves put Bat-Mite in the script. If you did, Matt, I'm going to be really, really stoked. Instant green light."

It is worth noting that the reply is more on the humorous side because Matt Reeves' Batman universe would seem too dark for a character like Bat-Mite to feature in. However, that doesn't mean that Bat-Mite won't appear on screen at all.

With James Gunn at the helm, the possibility of Bat-Mite making an appearance in a Batman movie is strong

Matt Reeves' project is not the only one featuring The World's Greatest Detective. We also have the DCU project, The Brave and the Bold, which is set to feature Batman with the new Robin, Damian Wayne, Bruce's biological son with Talia Al Ghul. This project, unlike Matt Reeves' film, might be lighter.

Thus, Bat-Mite may have a place in James Gunn's DCU, and his affections for the character only make it more possible.
