American country music singer, songwriter, and television personality Luke Bryan recently appeared on the CNN podcast All There Is With Anderson Cooper, where he revealed the cause of death of his older sister, Kelly Bryan Cheshire, who died on May 8, 2007, aged 39.

Speaking with host Anderson Cooper, Luke Bryan, 49, shared that it was Sudden Death Syndrome. He went on:

“I've never really explained what happened to my sister. There's some misinformation out there on the internet, and I think some people kind of wonder what happened, and they think that we've tried to cover it up.”

The American Idol judge continued:

“There is a very, very small percentage of people that die for no reason in the world. And it's called Sudden Death Syndrome, and that's essentially what they described my sister's death as. She was in her home doing her laundry, and it was... it was like, you know, somebody just turned the switch off on her and it was just tragic beyond words.”

Luke Bryan’s brother-in-law and Kelly Bryan Cheshire’s husband, Ben Lee Cheshire, died seven years after his wife on November 29, 2014, aged 46. He was the owner of South Appraisal Service in Georgia.

During his latest podcast appearance, Luke Bryan also shared that the autopsy of his sister came back “inconclusive,” and couldn’t provide answers to their questions, including whether there was a family history of Sudden Death Syndrome or whether her children would inherit it.

However, he mentioned that Kelly may have fainted and fallen on the floor, resulting in an orbital bone injury, adding that if someone was around at the time, she may have had a chance of survival.

More about Luke Bryan’s late brother-in-law, Ben Lee Cheshire

According to his obituary on Mathews Funeral Home, Ben Lee Cheshire was born on July 21, 1968, in Albany, Georgia. He spent his later life in Leesburg, Georgia. His parents were Ben Cheshire Jr and Barbara Cheshire. Ben had a sister named Stacey.

Cheshire passed out of Lee County High School in 1986 and later graduated from Georgia Southern University. He was a business and community member who was part of the Lee County Recreational Department and a fan of the USC Trojans soccer team.

Luke Bryan’s brother-in-law died at the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital on November 29, 2014. His cause of death remains undisclosed.

Kelly Bryan Cheshire and Ben Lee Cheshire are survived by their three children: Jordan, Kris, and Til. Upon Ben’s death, Luke Bryan and his wife Caroline took in their nephew Til, who was 13 at the time.

"We feel like if we just stay positive through this, maybe we'll be a positive inspiration for people that had these things happen to 'em. You just have to plough on and play the hand that's dealt… Tough stuff," the Nashville crooner shared back then during his appearance on ‘Good Morning America’ in February 2025.

According to Mail Online, the couple later adopted all three Cheshire children and raised them as their own, alongside their two sons: Tatum Tate, 15, and Thomas Bo, 17.

Unfortunately, Luke Bryan also lost his older brother, Chris, 26, in a car accident in 1995. Speaking about losing his two siblings and brother-in-law, he told People Magazine in 2021:

“Maybe Chris and Kelly and Lee have moved some puzzle pieces around to make my life so fortunate. When I say my prayers at night, I have to say: ‘Thank y'all for looking after us down here.’”

The Mind of a Country Boy artist also shared he would never truly get over their deaths.

During the recent podcast, Luke called Kelly the “best mother” who was “everything in our lives.”
