Black Disciples are a street gang that emerged from Chicago, Illinois, in the 1950s. The gang primarily consists of members from the Black community and was formed by teenagers from the Hyde Park, Englewood, and Kenwood neighborhoods of the city. The three neighborhoods are historically Black and POC majority neighborhoods.

The gang's original name was the Devil's Disciples. As per the National Gang Crime Research Center, the gang's founding members included the likes of Mingo Shread, Prince Old Timer, Kilroy, Leonard Longstreet, Night Walker, and, more importantly, David Barksdale. Barksdale would go on to consolidate his leadership of The Devi's Disciples by 1961, earning the moniker of 'King David.'

David died in 1974, which led to the formation of Black Gangster Disciples. According to the National Gang Crime Research Center, the Black Gangster Disciples split in 1978 into three gangs. These three gangs are the Black Disciples, the Gangster Disciples, and the BGs.

The Black Disciples gained notoriety when they executed their 11-year-old member, Robert 'Yummy' Sandifer, after he shot a 14-year-old girl, Shavon Dean, with a 9mm pistol. Sandifer was killed by Derrick Hardaway and his brother, Cragg Hardaway.

According to the Virtual NCJRS Library at the US Department of Justice Website, the Disciples have survived throughout the decades through the criminal exploitation of children, like the incidents mentioned above. However, leaving the gang is also easy, as per the website.

Unlike other gangs, members of the Black Disciple gang can leave by simply giving a valid reason and promising not to join any other gang in the future. Joining the gang also does not require one to commit criminal activities. Members who are above 35 can also retire to inactive status automatically.

The BDs are known for their syndicated gambling activities, particularly craps games. The gang uses systems of ritualized violence to maintain internal control and uses house parties in the neighborhoods they control to generate solidarity. Alongside their Chicago cells, called sets, the Black Disciples have been seen in cities such as Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Not much information is available publicly on the recent hierarchies and structures of the gang. As per the National Gang Crime Research Center, in 1996, the structure of the gang consisted of sets, with each set managed by First Demeterius, Assistant Co-Minister, and at the top, the Minister. The overall organization is led by a King. The last publicly known King of the gang was King Shorty.
