Late MLB star Tyler Skaggs’ wife, Carli Skaggs, and his parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Los Angeles Angels, more than six years after he died on July 1, 2019, from an accidental overdose. A civil trial based on the lawsuit is currently underway at a court in Santa Ana, Southern California, according to CBS News.

Carli is a former luxury travel advisor and the founder, President, and CEO of the Tyler Skaggs Foundation.

In the legal filing, Skaggs’ family has argued that the Los Angeles Angels made a series of reckless decisions that allowed its former communication director, Eric Kay, to provide the team’s players with drugs when he was himself an addict and a dealer, as per the court documents.

It is noteworthy that Kay had already been convicted in 2022 for supplying the late Tyler Skaggs with a fake oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl that eventually caused his death. He is currently serving a 22-year sentence in federal prison.

On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, Carli Skaggs testified that she was unaware of the extent of her husband’s substance abuse problem, according to CBS News. She added that if she knew about it, she would have done everything in her power to prevent it. Tyler Skaggs’ widow shared in her testimony that he felt the pressure to stay fit at all times to keep up with his career.

Tyler’s teammate and Angels outfielder Mike Trout testified at the trial, as did ex-pitcher Matt Harvey. CBS News reported that ex-Angels Wade Miley, who currently plays for the Cincinnati Reds, is also expected to testify later this week.

On the afternoon of July 1, 2019, the Southlake Police Department in Dallas, Texas, responded to a call of an unconscious male in a room at the Hilton Hotel. Upon arrival, the emergency responders found Tyler Skaggs, 27, unresponsive before pronouncing him dead at the scene.

At the time, the law enforcement suspected no foul play. However, upon investigation, it was revealed that the pro starting pitcher choked on his own vomit, and a mixture of alcohol, fentanyl, and oxycodone was found in his system. They were later proved to have been provided by Eric Kay.

Kay’s 2022 federal criminal trial revealed that he also supplied drugs to other players of the LA Angels between 2017 and 2019.

Now, the wrongful death suit against the team has them argue that Tyler’s death was the result of his own heavy drinking on his own time and privacy of his hotel room, according to CBS News. His family is now seeking $118 million in lost earnings, compensation for pain and suffering, and punitive damages.

Skaggs was on a team trip to suburban Dallas to open a four-game series against the Texas Rangers when the tragedy occurred.
