Everything about Cecelia in My Oxford Year
When Cecelia enters the storyline of My Oxford Year, it can be easily assumed that, because of her proximity to Jamie, it could lead to some unforeseen and ugly situation interfering with the budding romance of Anna and Jamie. But the truth is often more than what meets the eye.
Cecelia is not someone who is romantically entangled with Jamie. Neither do they have any se*ual liaisons. But then, why was she seen beside Jamie during his sickness at his place when Anna came looking for answers?
Cecelia is actually a very dear friend of Jamie. In fact, she is a part of the family. But there is a certain enigma attached to the character. It is revealed that the history of Cecelia and Jamie's friendship dates back in time. It is from the time when Jamie's late brother, Eddie, was battling cancer. Cecelia was the partner of Eddie. So, ever since Eddie's demise, Cecelia has been closely connected with the family.
Cut to the present, it is revealed that Jamie, too, has developed cancer like Eddie. So, Cecelia supports and cares for him during his illness. She safeguards and supports Jamie and his reasons for not wanting Anna to witness the heartbreaking truth.
So, after finding out the complex history, it all comes full circle to realize why Cecelia initially came off as someone who is not supportive of Jamie and Anna's relationship. It was not her being unsupportive, envious, or petty. Her actions were driven by a place of immense love and care towards Jamie and the entire family of Eddie.
My Oxford Year is derived from a book penned by Julia Whelan. In the book, too, the character of Cecelia exists. From the original literary material, not much is changed in its film adaptation-except one tiny but significant detail. In the film, Cecelia is established as Eddie's girlfriend. Whereas in the book, Eddie's name is Oliver, and Cecelia was engaged to him before Oliver passed away.
