Charley Scalies, best known for his roles in HBO’s acclaimed series The Wire and The Sopranos, has died at the age of 84 on May 1, 2025.

According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Scalies passed away peacefully in a nursing facility located in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, his daughter Anne Marie Scalies told the outlet.

He was born as Charles Joseph Scalies Jr., born in Philadelphia on July 19, 1940. He grew up above his father's pool hall in South Philadelphia, where he entertained customers with jokes and impressions from a young age.

After attending St. Joseph’s College, he worked as the director of sales and contracts at Clifton Precision. In the early 1990s, he returned to acting and performed in community and dinner theater productions.

He is survived by his wife, Angeline M. Scalies, and his five children—Chuck, Angeline, Tony, Christa, and Anne Marie—and his four grandchildren, per his obituary. It describes his wife as “the true love and joy of his life,” and they were married for 62 years. Charley and Angeline tied the knot in 1958 and stayed together until he took his last breath this May.

Family was a priority for him, stated his obituary. It noted,

“Charley emphasized the importance of family, stating that loving their mother, spending quality time, and teaching respect and hard work were key elements of fatherhood. He believed that a father’s role is to guide children toward self-sufficiency.”

In his 2015 interview with Matthew Toffolo, the CEO of the WILDsound Festival, Charley Scalies opened up on his relationship with his wife and how he met her.

He said that he was involved in high school and college productions between his sophomore year and his junior year at St. Joseph’s College. It was during this time he met his wife, Angeline. He described her as “a dark-haired beauty from North Philly,” and, within a matter of weeks, the two got married. He said,

“Shortly after graduation, I took a “real job”, married my Angeline, and together we set out to happily create and raise five children.”

After his marriage, he continued to perform theater shows, which ranged from “parish shows to community theater to dinner theater,” per the outlet. His roles included Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls, Billy Flynn in Chicago, and The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz.

He said that his wife also performed with him on stage, which involved a two-person one-act play called “American Coffee” by Victor Bumbalo. He further opened up on the secret to being a good father.

He said it involves loving children’s mother, spending as much time as possible with your family, teaching them to respect themselves and others, and working hard. He also advised listening to your kids, not judging them, applauding their success, and correcting them quietly.

According to People Magazine, his funeral service will be held on May 8, 2025, at 11:00 am local time at Moore, Snear & Ruggiero Funeral Home in Trappe, Pennsylvania.
