In a January 31 post this year, Georgia O’Connor announced that she had cancer, and wrote in an Instagram post about how she experienced months of unexplained pain since October 2024. During this period, she felt ignored by doctors despite her high-risk conditions of ulcerative colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis.

Her post read:

“There’s really no easy way to say this, but I have cancer. Now that’s out the way, it’s time to expose the absolute incompetent RATS that have allowed this to happen.”

She continued,

“For 17 weeks since the start of October, I’ve been in constant pain, going back and forth between Durham and Newcastle RVI A&E knowing deep down something was seriously wrong. I said from the start I felt it was cancer. I KNEW the risks. I have colitis and PSC, two diseases that dramatically increase the chances of getting it.”
“I KNOW how high my risk is and they do too. They always did. But not one doctor f*cking listened to me. Not one doctor did the scans or blood tests I begged for whilst crying on the floor in agony.”

She said that they refused to run tests on her and said that it was “all in my head.”

Georgia O’Connor had earlier shared the different ways her boyfriend, Adriano Cardinali, showed up for her, even if it involved quitting his job. In February 2025, she wrote an appreciation post for him where she mentioned that he is “doing everything in his power to save me.”

She wrote:

“Whilst the doctors who neglected me are stuck in their ways, he’s out there driving across Europe, finding treatments they don’t even know exist. Researching day and night, chasing down every option, making sure I have every single chance to beat this.”

Her death was confirmed by her promoter, Ben Shalom's Boxxer, in a statement. He said,

"We are heartbroken by the passing of Georgia O'Connor. A true warrior inside and outside the ring, the boxing community has lost a talented, courageous and determined young woman far too soon.”

He added:

"Georgia was loved, respected and admired by her friends here at Boxxer. Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this difficult time."

Georgia O’Connor has had a remarkable career since she won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017. She also earned a silver medal at the 2017 World Youth Championships and a bronze in the same tournament in 2018.
