American actress, stand-up comedian, and activist Hannah Einbinder is trending for her winning speech at the 2025 Emmy Awards. She won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award for her role as struggling comedy writer Ava Daniels in the HBO Max dramedy series, Hacks. Hannah, who is the daughter of original Saturday Night Live cast member Laraine Newman and the writer-director Chad Einbinder, closed her acceptance speech with the words,
“Go Birds, f**k ICE, and free Palestine.”
The speech has since gone viral across social media platforms, including X. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Einbinder told reporters backstage at the press room that she felt it was “important to talk about Palestine” as the issue is something that is close to her heart. She also spoke about having friends who are working as frontline workers in Gaza.
"I feel like it’s my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the state of Israel because our religion and our culture are such an important and longstanding institution that is really separate from this really ethnonationalist state," the actress-comedian added.
Earlier this month, nearly 4,000 Hollywood figures, including Hannah, signed the Film Workers for Palestine pledge to discontinue working with Israeli film companies that are "implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people." Speaking about it, the 30-year-old Californian mentioned:
“Boycotting is an effective tool to create pressure on the powers that be to meet the moment... The boycott does not target individuals, only institutions complicit in genocide.”
Everything you need to know about Hannah Einbinder’s parents
Hannah Einbinder was born to Jewish parents, Laraine Newman and Chad Einbinder, on May 21, 1995, in Los Angeles, California. Her mother is an actress, comedian, and writer, best known for being the founding cast member of the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live.
Newman, 73, worked on SNL from 1975 to 1980, most notably for her roles as Lily Tomlin, Connie Conehead, and Christie Christina, among others. Hannah Einbinder’s mom was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2017 and most recently appeared on SNL’s 50th anniversary special.
Before that, Laraine Newman did mime and improv and founded the comedy group The Groundlings. She also acted in TV and films, such as Invaders from Mars, Problem Child 2, Coneheads, Jingle All the Way, and The Flintstones. Newman served as a voice artist for Pixar films, including Finding Nemo, Inside Out, and WALL-E.
Laraine is the younger sister of Emmy-winning TV writer and musician Tracy Newman. She released her memoir, May You Live in Interesting Times, in 2021.

Laraine Newman married commercial actor, writer, and director Chad Einbinder, 62, in 1991 and divorced him nearly 25 years later in 2015. They share two children, Spike and Hannah Einbinder.
Speaking to Cracked in 2024, Newman shared,
“When I look back and I look at my IMDb, I never really stopped working. The only years I didn’t work were when my children were born in 1991 and 1995. Other than that, I worked all the time, and once I got into voiceover, I worked far more frequently.”
She continued,
“The only drawback about it is that people think I haven’t been working when, my God, I really have been. You can be perceived that way, and it’s unpleasant. Especially since I was involved in something like Saturday Night Live, which continuously gets attention from people who don’t know what I’ve been doing. That said, it’s so fun, and I love it so much.”
Meanwhile, during her 2025 interview with Town & Country, Hannah Einbinder shared that her parents “kind of discouraged” her from pursuing a career in Hollywood. However, she praised their “relentless work ethic.”
The Hacks actress recalled accompanying her parents to their auditions as a kid and shared that their home was kind of a stage for them to perform together as a family. Hannah quipped,
“Everyone was performing for each other. My dad was performing for my mom. My mom was performing for my dad. She was performing for my siblings and me. We were performing for her… I think a lot of people’s parents are like, ‘If you become a doctor, I’ll love you,’ and my parents are like, ‘Make me laugh and I’ll love you.’”
She also told The Hollywood Reporter that she and her dad, Chad, bond over their mutual love for the Philadelphia Eagles. Mr. Einbinder has acted in movies and TV shows like Doctor Dolittle, The Time Traveller's Wife, and Tangled.
In August 2021, Hannah Einbinder sat for an interview with The Times of Israel and spoke about her Jewish upbringing, an awards show-themed bat mitzvah in 2008, and learning to deal with antisemitism.
On Sunday, during her first Emmy win, Hannah Einbinder shared how she was “committed to the personal narrative that it was actually cooler to continue to lose,” referring to her years of nominations without a win.
“But this is cool too! This is also punk rock,” she added about her this year’s victory.
The 30-year-old gave a shoutout to her co-star Jean Smart for standing by her “like a sun” and giving her the “warmth” she needed to flourish. She also thanked the creators of Hacks, including Jen Statsky, Paul W. Downs, and Lucia Aniello, for changing her life in “every conceivable way, but not just by giving me a great gig, but by being my friends and being my family.”
Hannah Einbinder was previously nominated for an Emmy in the same category in 2021, 2022, and 2024. This year, the ceremony was hosted by Nate Bargatze at the Peacock Theater in LA on September 14.
Hannah Einbinder is not the only one to voice her support for Palestine during the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Javier Bardem wore a keffiyeh to the red carpet, showing his support for Film Workers for Palestine.
