British-Australian actress Miriam Margolyes, famous for her role in Harry Potter, is in a civil partnership with longtime companion Heather Sutherland. The two have been together for over 50 years now.
Margolyes also talked about assisted death while speaking to the Daily Mail, referring to her health and old age. In a reported statement to the Daily Mail, she said:
"I don't want to go through a slowly diminishing period of pain and embarrassment. If a stroke meant I couldn't speak, or I was doubly incontinent, or I lost my mind completely, I would ask to be put down. That's because I want to be who I am. I don't want to be less than I can be."
Miriam Margolyes has also made it clear in her Daily Mail interview that she would not take drugs like Ozempic, blaming food ads on media as the real problem.
The 84-year-old is set to appear in the upcoming projects Holy Days and Heart of Darkness, according to IMDb. Miriam's partner, Heather Sutherland, is an Australian historian and retired professor who previously taught at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Sutherland, born in 1943, has a master’s degree in Asian studies.
When did Heather Sutherland meet Miriam Margolyes
Sutherland and Margolyes first met in 1968, according to The Guardian. After a few years, Sutherland earned her Ph.D. at Yale in 1973, focusing on Java’s indigenous administrative corps. The next year, she became a professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Despite being together for many years, they have not spent much time together due to their professions and busy schedules.
However, the actress expressed an interest in living together during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, saying that after spending many years apart, she now wishes to spend her remaining time with Sutherland.
Speaking to The Guardian about Heather Sutherland in a 2021 interview, Miriam Margolyes said:
"She’s a wonderful, intelligent, ironic, sensitive, observant brilliant woman and she’s just written a book, too, a magisterial piece of excellence about the trade routes in the Spice Islands from the 17th century to today."
The statement continued:
"She doesn’t like showbiz, but I think she’s proud of my work. She’s a reserved person, completely different emotionally from me. Very contained. And she often finds my explosions difficult."
Heather Sutherland has kept herself mostly out of the spotlight and away from public appearances, choosing to live a private life. She reportedly lives in Amsterdam.
Miriam Margolyes is also the author of many books, including This Much Is True and Oh Miriam!: Stories from an Extraordinary Life.
