American conservative journalist Bari Weiss was named as the new editor-in-chief of CBS News after its parent company, Paramount Skydance, recently acquired her online news and commentary platform, The Free Press.
Formerly known as Common Sense, The Free Press was co-founded by Bari Weiss, along with her wife, satirist and columnist Nellie Bowles, and her sister, Suzy Weiss, in 2021.
While Bari Weiss is now married to a woman, she was previously married to a man named Jason Kass, an environmental engineer and public policy expert, according to Distractify.
Bari Weiss has openly spoken about liking and dating both men and women over the years. She has even admitted being “mostly attracted to women.” However, she refuses to stick to labels, such as being bisexual or lesbian. She has stated, as per her 2019 profile on Vanity Fair,
"I’ve been in love with both men and women. I've been ghosted by both men and women. I don’t trade on my sexual identity in that way for political points. I think that’s lame and it’s not my style."
All you need to know about Bari Weiss’ ex-husband, Jason Kass
Bari Weiss was married to Jason Kass between 2013 and 2016. While little is known about their relationship or the reasons for its end, Kass is well-recognized in the field of environmental engineering, where he has served for over 15 years.
According to engineeringforchange.org, he is also a social business entrepreneur who is the founder and president of Toilets for People. Launched in 2012, the firm “designs, manufactures, and sells affordable, portable family-scale composing toilets to communities in the developing world,” according to Jason Kass’ LinkedIn.
Additionally, Kass is well-versed in water and sanitation engineering and has worked as a consultant with small and big companies as well as city agencies. These include working as a contributing editor for Engineering for Change, LLC, environmental manager for EnTech Engineering PC, chair of project operations at Building Foundations Inc., and section chief for the New York City Department of Design and Construction.
Jason Kass also served as the Chapter Vice President and Volunteer for Engineers Without Borders between 2006 and 2013. His other employers include Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation, ENSR International, Earth Tech, Louis Berger Group, and ATC Associates, as per his bio on LinkedIn.
A native of Jamaica, Vermont, Bari Weiss’ ex-husband was also a general contractor, owner, and operator of rental properties. Kass, who is now based in Brooklyn, NYC, attended Tufts University, from where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering and a Master's in hazardous materials management, remediation technology, and civil engineering.
Jason is a member of the United Latino Students Association and is a professional engineer with licenses in New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Kass has travelled worldwide to Peru, El Salvador, and Haiti to “design and install water and sanitation infrastructure” as part of the nonprofit Rotary International and Engineers Without Borders-USA.
Bari Weiss began dating her current wife, Nellie Bowles, in 2018 and tied the knot three years later. The former tech reporter for The New York Times and Weiss is now a family with two children.
Her past romantic partners include comedian-actress Kate McKinnon and Columbians for Academic Freedom co-founder Ariel Beery.

Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of The Free Press was first reported in June. Now, four months later, it has been finalized. Speaking about the partnership, Weiss shared in a video posted on the X account of The Free Press how it will allow “our ethos of fearless, independent journalism to reach an enormous, diverse, and influential audience.”
“We honor the extraordinary legacy of CBS News by committing ourselves to a singular mission: building the most trusted news organization of the 21st Century,” Bari added.
Meanwhile, Skydance chief David Ellison called her a “proven champion of independent, principled journalism,” and added that he was confident that Weiss’ “entrepreneurial drive and editorial vision will invigorate CBS News.”
