Who is Ryne Sandberg's wife? Family details explored as Cubs icon dies at 65

The former Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs player Ryne Sandberg, known by his nickname Ryno, died on July 28 at the age of 65. The news was announced on his Instagram page with the statement:

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Ryne passed away tonight in the comfort of his home. Ryne was surrounded by his loving wife, Margaret, their children, and grandchildren."

Ryne Sandberg was battling with metastatic prostate cancer and was regularly updating fans with the procedure. A few days before his death, he also posted a health update in a post where he wrote:

"It’s been a challenging few months as I have been going through treatment on a regular basis. While I am continuing to fight, I’m looking forward to making the most of every day with my loving family and friends."

Ryne Sandberg married Margaret Koehnemann in 1995. The couple, together, also founded Ryno Kid Care. Margaret is a mother of three from her former marriage.

Prior to that, Ryne Sandberg was married to Cindy White, whom he wed in 1979. Their marriage parted ways in 1995. Ryne shares two children with Cindy, Justin Sandberg and Lindsey Sandberg.

Ryne Sandberg appreciates his wife in a social media post

Ryne announced that he had prostate cancer in January 2024. A few months after the announcement, Ryne uploaded a Mother's Day post with a photo of his wife, Margaret, appreciating her for her support. In the caption, he wrote:

"Happy Mothers Day to my wife Margaret and life partner! We will be celebrating 30 years together next year, the experiences, events, and memories are endless."

The statement continued:

"These past 6 months have been a journey and test for both of us but she has taken complete control of my battle with cancer like a Team Captain and I’ve managed to be as comfortable as possible and do all the doctors have ordered because of her."

In the caption, Sandberg also called her his rock and thanked her for standing by him throughout his cancer journey.

Ryne is reportedly a grandfather to eight. In 2016, he shared a photo of his granddaughter with the caption:

"Sunday morning grandaughter fix! 1 month old, with Lindsey and Adam visiting.🌷🎀💕"
