“Who is this white man she with?”: Fans react as Summer Walker arrives at VMAs with “special friend” months after swearing off men

American singer and songwriter Summer Walker arrived at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on September 7, with a mystery man. The R&B artist posed on the red carpet holding hands with an older white man, smiling for the camera. Walker fed cotton candy to her date while sharing kisses.

In an exclusive ET Online video, reporter Denny Directo is seen asking Summer who her date was. The singer shared:

The man in the white tux was her “special friend.” She also said, “Mind y’all business” when Directo asked, “How special?”

The pair also shared that they met via a mutual friend in Los Angeles.

It has been four months since Summer announced her split from her ex-boyfriend and rapper, Rico Recklezz. Around the same time in May 2025, she also swore off men.

“I’m literally, honestly & truly over men like, that’s it for me. I find more peace in being alone, but let’s normalize moving on without mess,” she wrote on Instagram back then.

Back to the 2025 MTV VMAs, videos and images of Summer Walker’s red-carpet appearance with a date sent the internet into a frenzy. For instance, X user Richard Allen, aka @yaboyricha, commented on Rap Alert’s clip from the event showing Walker and his new beau.

“Who is this white man she with?” the user asked.

Many others joined the conversation and shared their reactions on the platform.

“White men love them an ethnic circus freak,” a netizen wrote.

“Not she got a sugar daddy now,” another netizen wrote.

“This is def a stunt to get the people talking. Hopefully, it works in her favor. We love sugar daddy aesthetics,” a user wrote.

Others continued to chime in.

During her brief interview with ET Online on the red carpet of the 2025 MTV VMAs, Walker shared she was channelling Pamela Anderson’s pink VMAs look.

When asked, “Does that make you Tommy Lee?” her date replied, “Uhh, you can say that.”

Summer also shared that her new album, Finally Over It, was ready. She promised her fans would be able to explore “a lot of different genres,” and it was proof that she could do “all types of music.”

Her date also mentioned that his favorite Summer Walker song was the one she was nominated for at the VMAs. He was referring to her 2024 single, Heart of a Woman, which was nominated in the Best R&B category. Mariah Carey won in the category for her song, Type Dangerous.

Elsewhere, the White Tee artist took to her Instagram on Sunday night and shared cozy pictures with the mystery man. It was captioned,

“F**k my type.”

It is noteworthy that the mom of three announced that she was “single” in a May 8 post, announcing her split from Chicago rap artist, Rico Recklezz, whom she had dated since December 2024 and went public in early 2025.

Summer Walker also urged people to “move on” and "not create false narratives” about her dating life. She went on:

“I’m literally, honestly & truly over men like, that’s it for me. I find more peace in being alone, but let’s normalize moving on with out mess,” she wrote on Instagram back then.

In a follow-up Story, the 29-year-old Atlanta native added that she was “over men.” She continued:

“No disrespect, no hard feelings, no bad mouthing each other. Everything copasetic on my end, it’s all lessons n love.”

In the next two IG Stories, the R&B singer-songwriter shared she was looking to find peace and shared lyrics from her song, Finding Peace, while also playing in the background. According to a Blast report that appeared on Yahoo! Entertainment, she later reposted an X post from @Oasisofserenity, which read:

“‘You’re so strict.’ God forbid a girl not play about her peace.”

Summer Walker was previously in a relationship with Atlanta rapper, record producer, and songwriter London on da Track between 2019 and 2021. She shares her first child, a daughter, with him.

Subsequently, she dated Lvrd Pharaoh for a year in 2022 and gave birth to his twin boys in December of that year. The other men Summer Walker has dated in the last two years reportedly include Lil Meech, Demetrius Flenory Jr., and Coop Cashington.
