Mission: Impossible helmer Christopher McQuarrie recently opened up about the significance of Henry Cavill's much-anticipated Superman 2 if it ever materializes. According to his latest interview on Happy Sad Confused hosted by Josh Horowitz, McQuarrie mentioned that the highly anticipated sequel would have addressed Superman's fears had it ever happened.
To quote his exact words:
"The first five minutes of the movie was a setup, after which you knew exactly what made Superman tick, and exactly what Superman was most afraid of and why Superman made the choices that he made, and it would have been epic."
The DCEU's Man of Steel sequel had many questions to answer until the inception of DC Studios (which is currently being headed by James Gunn). As mentioned by McQuarrie, the movie would have turned out to be 'absolutely extraordinary,' and 'the first five minutes' had the key to all that never happened.
Henry Cavill's Man of Steel sequel had a lot to serve (but DCEU's Superman never happened)
Back in 2022, while speaking to ScreenRant, lead star Henry Cavill had also shared his interest in being part of a Superman sequel and what lies ahead for Clark Kent if the DCU continued its saga. He mentioned his closeness and 'connection to the character.'
As Cavill said, Kent, aka Superman, is someone who can 'give and love' and that's obviously not always in a romantic sense. He is someone who loves the people of Earth, and the way his role materialized in the first movie, Cavill wanted the Superman fans to walk in his shoes and spread the love around. To quote his exact words:
"But the most important thing, which I will be aiming for, is for the audience to leave the cinema and to feel like they can fly, to feel like they can protect, and to feel like they want to give to everyone else."
At that point, Henry Cavill had 'plenty of desires' and was also pretty hopeful about how things would turn out for the DCU. So, it kind of comes with mixed feelings to witness that what could have been a major turning point in a somewhat debated franchise took a whole other direction over the course of time.
Recently, while talking to Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Christopher McQuarrie added key details about his Superman sequel and how the film would have had a huge impact on the franchise. McQuarrie further drew comparisons with Walt Disney's 2009 animated comedy drama Up and said:
"But I will tell you the first five minutes of my Superman movie, which was...imagine Pixar's Up, a sequence with no dialogue that covered that character in the first five minutes."
His comments clearly stated that Superman is a movie that is all 'about hope' - not to mention the kind of inspiration it creates, accompanied by the 'joy' brought in by the character. Keeping in mind all the mixed reviews and criticism, the Superman sequel would have been the perfect opportunity for McQuarrie to justify whatever went wrong with the DCEU.
